gkmpa Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Congrats to everyone that got money or just plain got in! Has anyone had any success in negotiating funding from LBJ? I got my acceptance with ZERO money, but Michigan has offered me $25k each year for two years. The massive money difference seems like a no-brainer, but the LBJ school was my first choice as my wife and I love Austin. Thanks!
GoHogs! Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Congrats to everyone that got money or just plain got in! Has anyone had any success in negotiating funding from LBJ? The massive money difference seems like a no-brainer, but the LBJ school was my first choice as my wife and I love Austin. Thanks! Hi gkmpa, I'm in the same boat, with no funding from LBJ but offers from others. I too prefer UT, but it is hard to ignore those other funding offers. I emailed the Graduate Coordinator and LBJ Financial officer to inquire about internal 2nd year funding options, and in that same email, I mentioned the funding offers from other schools. I have yet to receive a reply, which is unusual since the graduate coordinator is very good about responding quickly and thoroughly. However, the financial officer was out of the office last week when I sent the email, so maybe I'll hear something soon. I will post a message if I do, regardless of the response. BTW, I have no first hand knowledge of anyone negotiating money with the LBJ School, although I don't doubt it has been done before. It might be better to approach the topic if you are planning to visit the school before responding to the admissions offer. Other opinions, anyone? Best of luck!
sosh Posted March 31, 2008 Author Posted March 31, 2008 I sent an e-mail to Lucy Neighbors last week asking if there was a funding waiting list or any other opportunities for funding through the LBJ school. She replied a few hours later skirting the fellowship question but provided some very helpful information about RA's and TA's. Apparently they hire between 12 to 18 TAs but typically they pick from PhD and 2nd year masters students. RA's do come up but usually go to students already active in the program. She added that we still are open to pursuing RA/TAships in other schools at UT and also mentioned several administrative jobs at LBJ that are able to be worked around classes.
GoHogs! Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Sosh, thanks for the update! I didn't contact Lucy Neighbors, but another (or the other) grad coordinator. Perhaps that is why I haven't received a response. I'm glad to know that some 2nd year funding is available for the taking. Again, I'll post what I find out once I hear. Thanks again!
gkmpa Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Gotta give it to the people at UT--they're fast in responding to inquiries. ... I found out that the LBJ school couldn't give up any more money, but apparently they did take another look at my file. So, I wouldn't count on getting anymore than what they've initially offered. That's good information about the other funding opportunities. Though a funding waitlist is definitely a good question. I mean, by UT's own account, 80 to 100 of the 200-250 people they accept do not end up attending. Surely that's gotta free up some funds!
GoHogs! Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Received a response from Megan Murphy, Director of Admissions & Fin Aid, today. She lamented that more funding was not available, but the applicant pool this year was not only extremely competitive, applications were up 20% this year. So, she indicated that the admissions committee experienced some difficult decisions when assigning fellowships this year. Looks like we shouldn't expect any room for negotiation, folks. She also explained that TA, RA, and other on-campus positions are the norm for LBJ students who do not get enough funding or just simply want to work. On the bright side, at least future options exist for those without full fellowships! Anyone attending the visitation day next week? I'll be there with bells on. Hope to meet some of the other posters there!
sunyh Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Hi, I'm new to this board! I'm one of the admitted LBJ students, and I've decided to go to LBJ for graduate study. Will anyone go to LBJ too? Maybe we can share some information in the future! By the way, I'm an international student from Taiwan
sosh Posted April 8, 2008 Author Posted April 8, 2008 Welcome, Sunyh! I'm going to the open house tomorrow, and there seem to be more than a few people on here who are planning on enrolling.
