brooks Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 i applied to 10 schools for materials science and engineering PhD. ONLY 2 of them resulted one of them rejected me and the other accepted but no funding. i mailed professors but only one of them answered, saying no fund to grant an assistantship. i dont understand these schools, accepting to phd without funding. Do they expect us(international students) to study for PhD WITHOUT FUNDing for about 5 years. Materials science&eng is a research oriented field even in our poor country phd students are funded. We dont have a chance to work with our F 1 visa in US. I thinks this is a kind of rejection too. Do you think I have still chance to be admitted with funding ? or is it too early? it hurts me too much waiting for otherS is it too late to expect for other univ. I am worried that they have rejecte me and they only notify accepted students first. I sent mails to department staff but no answer yet. What am I supposed to do. for 2 weeks I couldn't work on my project and I couldn't do well on a midterm. Depression affected me too much. If I were a citizen of US I could have many chances. I think I will have to study my PhD in my country which will be very bad for me

Leica Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Is your country an EU/EEA member? You could always take some time off to work in the industry and reapply next year to schools in the US/UK/Europe. I don't know if you know any other European languages besides English and your native one, but even if not, apply to UK schools - you'd have a decent chance of getting funding AND you'll be allowed to work (I'm guessing, though this would depend on your citizenship, of course).
prats Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 hey even i have a similar thing i applied to 12 schools but have recieved an official reply from 4 and 2 waitlists (asked the graduate secretary) . Most of my friends have already got their share of calls !! this makes me dizzy
santana Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Do they expect us(international students) to study for PhD WITHOUT FUNDing for about 5 years. Materials science&eng is a research oriented field even in our poor country phd students are funded. Yes, you might be in one of those programs where conscious decision was made for a certain percentage of international students and no more (I was told 40% in one school) meaning they will not offer you financial aid no matter how qualified you are (and in math/science international applicants are generally better than US applicants). Do you think I have still chance to be admitted with funding ? or is it too early? You never know but some of the schools will not budge. Again, if this is a program with a lot of international applicants and with restriction how many will be admitted I think your chances are low.
4givn1 Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 The US economy is hurting really bad right now. A lot of schools are feeling "tight". A program I applied to last year only had funding for a single student and a couple others only had funding for 2 to 3--one of which even just was given $2 million.
zigazowohnow Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 Maybe that's what's going on with my program, I know they've been able to accept as many as 7 students previous years but this year they have a wait list and appear to only have 4 funded positions open. They fully guarantee funding for all of your years so maybe they're trying to be cautious considering the economy?
4givn1 Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 Probably. There is also the fact that a lot of the money that originally was going to research and the universities, especially in some fields, is now being spent on defense and the military. Furthermore because the economy and job market is bad and because a lot of the money and jobs are now being delegated for military, defense, and overseas, more people are either staying in school or applying to schools because they can't find work in their field. This makes the competition even tighter.
