ASDen Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Hello, normally (or at least at schools I'm applying to), TOEFL is automatically waived for domestic applicants regardless of any other factor recently i received the following response from berkely eecs "US Citizens must take the TOEFL if their undergraduate degree came from a non-English speaking country." is this a real tendency between a number of schools, or it is just berkely ? by no means i won't be able to take TOEFL before deadline, any suggestions ? anybody with more info on this point, please share Thanks,
krok Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 It depends. If you are US citizen but did not grow up or do any education in the US then most schools will require you to take it and if they don't they probably are not as competitive as Berkeley. That's probably what Berkeley means. There are a lot of people in the world with US citizenship who haven't really spent any significant time in the US (because their parents were international students or working here when they were born and then the family moved back to the home country while the child was still young). If that's your situation you'll need the TOEFL. If you did grow up in the US (and English is your native language) and you simply chose to get your undergrad degree abroad then they should not require the TOEFL.
