cwe93 Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) Hey everyone, Just want to get a little input on my chances for admittance to social psych and marketing (CB) PhD programs (mostly interested in judgment/decision making); I'm applying for fall 2011 as a college senior, and I just finished submitting all of my apps within the past couple of weeks. Here are my stats (any thoughts would be helpful!) ... Student status: College senior (age 22), graduating with a B.S. Management (concentration in marketing) from an Ivy League school GPA: 3.8/4.0 GRE: 610V, 770Q, 5.0W Research experience: R.A. for 2 years in 2 different social psych labs (just started work as a manager), individual research collaboration with a business professor (not published yet) and also worked as a teachers assistant (TA) for 2 years Work experience: 4 different internships in market research, real estate development, IT, consulting Awards: lots of random scholarships here and there (~7 different ones worth $1,000-$5,000) I'm applying to ~15 different top-tier social psych and marketing (CB) programs, and I'm starting to get worried that I won't be admitted anywhere; can anyone give me any indication of how likely it'd be that I'd get into either a really good social psych PhD, or a top marketing (CB) program? Many thanks!!! Edited January 3, 2011 by cwe93 cwe93 and eklavya 1 1
eklavya Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 kidding me? am not in your major, but i can tell you will have no problem whatsoever in getting into any program. i can understand your anxiety/nervousness but chill out. with these credentials, a japanese could kill a godzilla!
cwe93 Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Hi bhikhaari, Thanks for the reply and for the words of reassurance! I know that I've prepared myself the best I can, but the more and more I look at all these PhD's I applied to (7 social psych, 8 marketing), the competition just seems mind-boggling. Like out-of-this-world competitive (most of the programs I applied to have acceptance rates of ~2-5%, which frightens me lol). And that's aside from the fact that I would be a little peeved spending $1,200 just to get 15 rejections. But anyways, hope for the best and thanks again. Congrats on getting accepted to NCState!
eklavya Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 thanks! you are right - the degree of competition can sway things around. in my field, there isn't much competition as applicants narrow down to the most basic aspect of plant science. for example, even genetics, physiology, mol bio, and so on are broad terms. each of these field are finely sub-branched into various capillaries, and by the time people apply, the selection (of the field by the applicant) is so fine-tuned that there isn't much fight among the applicants for the spot. in other majors (and i guess, most of the non-science majors) this is different as there is quite a competition. but again, with your credentials, there isn't much room to worry. good luck! january is here - we shall get the fruits of our labor soon!
