Hi all-

Was wondering if anyone had some input on this: I'm a first-year PhD student in poli sci, focusing on Western Europe. I speak French very well (fluently while I was abroad there but not quite that level anymore), and my comps include a language exam. I also want to brush up on my French for field work purposes. I'd like to go there for a few weeks sometime before comps to take a language immersion class.

What I'm wondering is what possible sources of funding there are for foreign language study. FLAS specifically eliminates Spanish, French, and German, and I'm not really sure how to go about finding other sources of funding to do this. Any ideas?

thanks!

yea, im pretty sure it's difficult to find funding for "common" foreign languages (French, Spanish, German). Like you say, the FLAS eliminates them and so does the CLS. I would talk to the French department chair at your school. They usually have pretty good information about departmental grants or other outside grants to look into. What about a summer Fulbright? Could you swing saying you are doing some research in France and then take some language classes while you're over there? Or have you considered looking into summer English teaching positions? Maybe you could tutor and take your own classes at the same time (I know some people who have done that in Egypt).

Does anyone know when the new FLAS fellowships are announced? The funding package from a couple of my schools make it seriously important for me, now...

If you are available for summer study Middlebury language schools offer grants, even for non-degree students. I applied this year as a non degree student for Spanish and got a pretty generous offer. It does run out quickly, so act soon if interested. Good luck!

if you are talking about the FLAS for summer it varies depending on the school. i've gotten that award several times from my uni and it all depends on how many people they have apply. the decisions, at my university at least, are all made within the university.
