Ramblr Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Hi! Does anyone have a timeline as to when Chicago schools like Northwestern and UChicago a) invite people to an interview (I heard it was post-admittance) send out admissions notices Many thanks! Good luck!
manetdejeuner Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Good question. I scheduled an interview/visit at UChicago for late January. They told me that if I were to come in February, I should come the earlier part of the month, so I would say that they make decisions around this time?

Interesting... so you contacted your professor of interest and simply scheduled an interview? do you know if chicago does visits for prospective or accepted students?
manetdejeuner Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) I had contacted my professor of interest before submitting an application about scheduling a meeting and was told to schedule through the department secretary. Once I submitted my application, I contacted the secretary and she set me up an appointment with the professor. I've done this with every school that I have applied to---simply scheduled the visit/interview without waiting to be contacted. Some schools I've visited/interviewed at before submitting my application, some after. I am still a prospective student with no admits, but I am assuming that if UChicago had already decided who they were going to admit, they wouldn't have told me to come visit next week! manetdejeuner Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Well, I really don't have time, but I am willing to sacrifice my less-than-exciting part-time jobs for traveling and visiting schools. I applied to a small number (6) so it's manageable. Thanks for the good luck vibes, and good luck yourself! Wow! Really? Gosh, I wish I had your time and patience! Good luck in Chicago!

Shall I ring them up or just assume that the outcome will be bleak?

Shall I ring them up or just assume that the outcome will be bleak? Selphie, have no fear. It's a bit too early, I think... I hope! I would start worrying toward the middle to end of February. As someone posted above, when they spoke to someone at UChicago, they said the latest they can stop by is the first week of February, so that means they are still considering apps. Keep up the hope!
curiouser and curiouser Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 For what it's worth, I was waitlisted at UChicago last year, though not eventually admitted. I received a hardcopy letter informing me of my waitlist status on about February 28 or March 1, so one can assume the admit notices had been sent out a little while before that. Kudos to the person who was asked to come visit, by the way -- I contacted the department in November to ask if I could schedule a visit, and was told that the committee made a point of not meeting with prospective students until after admit letters were out. However, I was also told that persons/profs of interest were free to meet with whomever they liked, though many would probably defer to the other members of the committee. Anyway, best of luck to everyone!

Ramblr Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 I'm sitting at the source. since you obviously went through it yourself, how does u of c get back to people? phone/email/post? thank you!!!
lalala123 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I have a friend who got an offer from Art history at UC on February 1st last year. Selphie, have no fear. It's a bit too early, I think... I hope! I would start worrying toward the middle to end of February. Atlantis Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 They usually send out an email. Should be arriving this, or possibly next week. From what I hear, there are no modernists in the incoming class. So everybody else has a good chance?!

So everybody else has a good chance?! not a single modernist in a class of 11? chicago trying buck the trend, or what? stake through my heart, that is. whatever the case, is "what I hear" reliable, or should we modernists give up hope now? thanks for the insider info.

Interesting. To me, "modernist" can be a vague qualifier. No modernists=just no scholars of late 19th-20th century Western art? What about contemporary folks? Or modern/contemporary visual culture? I see these two latter categories fall under the heading of "modernism" quite often. Maybe as an aspiring art historian I should get a better hold on this terminology... Regardless, I'm excited to hear from U of C just like everyone else! I hope that the snowstorm doesn't delay these emails too much. Good luck everyone! Edited February 2, 2011 by greenpen
Atlantis Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 In this case, "modernist" refers to anything after 1900.
curiouser and curiouser Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 In this case, "modernist" refers to anything after 1900. as much as this bunch of masochists may think they want to know everything right now, no matter the cost, i'd venture to say this brand of sneak-peek, from the "source" info isn't helpful, and at this point verges on taunting. as painful as it always is, at least an official rejection letter has the benefit of not being delivered anonymously, via some web-based forum. i'm happy to know when/if a school makes their call, but if i'm gonna hear that i didn't make the cut at chicago (again), i'd much rather hear it from the "source" itself. thanks, queen, i know you're trying to help, but as a current student, you couldn't possibly understand. violetvivian 1
