CNDSoc Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Are there any other Phd Sociology applicants hitting refresh on the forum site and on their email inbox? Unfortunately I'm at the office all day sitting in front of two computer screens, so I have more than enough opportunities to check this website and my email  I can't help but notice all of the responses for psych, bio, and chem PhDs, but very few responses for the Sociology applicants!
joops Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Oh, I have Gmail, so I don't need to even hit refresh. I just always have one eye on the tab! I do check the forums constantly, but I will NOT allow myself to reach the results search because when I found out that I had not gotten an interview invite from Emory (and thus a de facto rejection or wait-list), I cried for two days. I decided not to put myself through that again. I'm soc of religion and pretty much feeling like my application was not as good as it could have been. How about you?

That happened with me and Texas-Austin! I emailed the grad coordinator just to be sure, but it looks as though I'll be getting a rejection. By the way, I applied to Indiana-Bloomington too I'm pretty happy with my application. This is my second round of applying. I applied during my MPhil in England, but at that time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do and I threw together my applications at the last minute. This time I spent a good year deciding what area I'd like to focus on (Sociology of Health), and researching universities, revising my SOP, etc. There are many people out there with amazing applications though, so I'm not 100% sure I'll get in. Bonkers Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I'm in sociology! Also applied to Indiana Bloomington. I keep my email in a tab for most of the day. The anticipation is getting pretty bad. Every time the phone rings I jump.
dreaming 1 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Do we know when we're likely to hear? Many of the schools say they give out offers by March 15 but I think it tends to happen earlier... Any ideas? The waiting is killing me! xo
CNDSoc Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 No! I'm dying. Texas-Austin was supposed to email us the results this month but I haven't heard from them. I emailed the graduate coordinator and she didn't respond, but a few days later (according to the results page) someone else emailed her and received a rejection. I'm pretty anxious about the whole thing... especially because I have the feeling that if I can't get into Texas-Austin's Sociology department then my only chances are Case Western and UBC I wish I hadn't looked at the results page!
Bonkers Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 word on the street: Columbia is making the acceptance calls next week. The source is very reliable. AHHHHHHHHHHH panic mode.

From a friend in the program, who heard it from a professor. For international, I am not sure... BUT you can always call in yourself and ask. I would wait until the end of the week.
knicole Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I can't decide if it is comforting that so many others are stressing about the SAME exact things that I am or if it just makes me more antsy! I applied to IU Bloomington and U Texas Austin also. Looks like there's a pattern here. Is this everyone's first year applying? For those of you who are doing this for the second time, what happened the first time? I am just trying to prepare for the worst. How ridiculously dramatic this all is!

For those of you who are doing this for the second time, what happened the first time? I am just trying to prepare for the worst. How ridiculously dramatic this all is! This is my second time applying, but first time taking it seriously. I applied in 2008 for Fall 2009. At that time I was sitting on a 3.27 cumulative GPA, 1210 GRE, an okay writing sample, and a shitty SoP (unfortunately, I was unaware that it was shitty because I asked for feedback from extremely supportive people). My letter of recommendations were good, but the rest of me was a mess. Flash forward... I did not get into a PhD program at that time, for obvious reasons. However, I was admitted into an MA program, which I decided would be a good career move. One cannot become a better candidate by resubmitting the same garbage year after year. The MA program opened me up to research experiences and helped me figure out what sub-field I wanted to do research in. After I graduated, I worked as an RA, wrote a new SoP that had direction, and studied for the GRE. In orther words, I busted my ass. Now, with a new writing sample, even better letters, better SoP, and better GRE... I am applying again. If I don't get in this year... I know this is the best I can do as an applicant and so will stop chasing this dream. I might go into market research... maybe put in another application next year--maybe. Heres to hoping you get in the first round ;D
CNDSoc Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Well, one down, 7 to go! Bye bye Wisconsin-Madison
Leigh Ann Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Hey, another SOC applicant here. I applied to UT-Austin and Berkeley like some of you in here. I am nervous to e-mail Texas to ask about the status of my application because it sounds like they're pretty quick to respond with their rejections! Trying to take things day by day right now (and not hyperventilate and pass out in my cubicle).
barilicious Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 To the UT-Austin applicants: have you logged in to Texas's status check lately? I was accepted on the 14th, but they just updated my status this past week. You may be able to get some news through logging in to that system. To the Indiana applicants: the DGS called me Monday night, and we talked for awhile. I don't think they are phoning EVERYONE who they may accept, but I'm not for sure. All I do know is that they will be making decisions within a week, so if anything like last year, I'm guessing we should hear something by Sunday...

I check my UT status every hour between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm (I'm not even exaggerating. I work in market research so I'm sitting in front of a computer all day) and it still says "We have received all credentials required to process your application. Your file has been forwarded to the Graduate Committee for review". I really anxious to hear from UT!
socgraduate11 Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I'm also a chronic refresher! I emailed UT Austin as well and didn't hear back, and there aren't updates on my status page, but I'm guessing the grad coordinator is a busy lady. Can't win 'em all
CNDSoc Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 (edited) I'm grouchy and tired of waiting. I feel like giving up (which might be a good thing bc maybe then I'll stop checking my application status, checking the results page, and checking this forum) Update: This made me feel better (from another thread): Tiglath-Pileser III : "There seems to be two rounds of rejections. The early rejections often come before the acceptances and are done to cull out the candidates that really don't have a chance of getting into the program. This is often done by administrators to narrow the candidate pool to a reasonable size for the admissions committee. These early rejections often go out a month or two before the bulk of decisions are made. Interview invites often go out during these first round of rejections. It's hard to say anything definitive about the interview process because departmental policies vary so widely here. It's usually really a bad sign to be included in this first round of rejections. Often the second round of rejections goes out after all the acceptance offers are made, although a few applications may be wait-listed quietly pending offers being accepted/rejected." Maybe we'll all be okay Edited February 2, 2011 by sararuwani

Did they let you know how many acceptance letters they sent out or the expected incoming cohort? Thanks
Bonkers Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Ugh. I got rejected from my dream school today... and I took a job that I hated because we needed the money... its a bad day.
