Hi everyone,

I have applied to a few UC schools and I see that I can edit my portfolio after I submitted it on the application portal, and even after the deadline- has anyone else noticed this or had experience with this? I edited my portfolio but now I'm nervous it's going to have some sort of negative impact on my application. 😬

I had a portfolio review with SMFA Tufts today and it was incredibly helpful! The admissions director gave me some things to think about as I finalize my portfolio and gave me reassurance that this is the right time to pursue an MFA, so, fingers crossed 😬

My final list of schools, all printmaking or interdisciplinary:

RISD
VCU
Tyler
Yale
SMFA Tufts
SUNY Purchase
SVA because I got an application waiver

Was that with Erin? She was awesome! So hepful.

Hi everyone. I love this forum but can't believe how few posts are on it this year!

I applied to four schools for sculpture. I can't move for school so I focused on schools I can commute to, which was fine because I'm very excited about them especially RISD/BU. I thought I'd be relieved to finish my application (I did in November) but waiting and not being able to do anything to help my chances feels harder than working on the SOP and all that!

That's great to know! Did you tour MassArt or talk to anyone there? I didn't get a super electric feel about working there as a sculptor since they said their cohort never has equal 3D/2D groups (less on 3D). BU seems so great though, the director of sculptor was such a pleasure to talk to and was really animated about what they can do in sculpture.

No I didn't tour MassArt, I kind of went with it because ideally I'd like to stay on the east coast, and their facilities seem really good but I have other schools that I'm more excited about, including BU. The BU info session was great, I definitely find the funding/ TA opportunities a little concerning but I agree they seem to have an expanded idea of sculpture which is good.  Did you tour MassArt?

Yes! I liked her a lot and was really appreciative to get a one-on-one review.

I'm surprised how few posts are in here as well. Hope we see some other people log on soon!

Yes and they do have great facilities - although I toured right as they got out for Thanksgiving break and the wood and metal shops were locked up so I couldn't see those. I probably just picked a bad day to tour! I had a friend get her MFA there last year in printmaking and she has had amazing opportunities to show in Boston and felt like the program was excellent for her.

Hi! I'm curious: how many people have applied/are planning to apply for sculpture?

I am applying for sculpture when the program is not interdisciplinary/you have to choose a medium specificity. Where did you apply?

Hey! I applied to Amherst. I’m not sure about the student who applied in the past, but usually what schools put on their website they stick with. That being said, it’s possible that they didn’t! Don’t give up yet! :)

Have you heard back at all?

Nope! But I saw you had an interview so, congratulations! I’m assuming since I haven’t had an interview a rejection is imminent. It may just take some time to hear back post-interview for you.

I applied to CMU and I feel like most of the negative stuff I’ve seen is old..but I could be wrong and feel free to correct me! It’s a well-ranked program but it was very much my reach school and I like the work being made there. I think if you have everything prepped, are able to apply then it doesn’t hurt to, and think the program will be a good fit then it doesn’t hurt to apply!

I wouldnt count it out, I feel like since I havent heard post interview I'm assuming rejection myself. They arent working off any timeline that was listed so who knows. Good luck with all your applications!

Hi, friends!

Have been lurking on the forum sine there were, like, 3 comments, so I thought it may be time to finally contribute! :)

(this is my first year applying and I don’t anticipate getting in anywhere, but gosh would I love to!)

i applied to the studio arts/drawing programs at:

-Michigan State University

-University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

-University of Arkansas

-East Tennessee State University

-Illinois State University (my top choice! Loved speaking with faculty/staff here ugh)

-The Ohio State University

i’m sort of in a weird transient phase of life right now and am down to move anywhere, so I only applied to state schools with the opportunity for fully funded GA/TAs. I have prior teaching experience both during and post BFA and my letters of recommendation are primarily from my employers at each of these positions, so I really hope that helps me! Have been prepping materials since last March and I applied in October. It feels like it’s been such a long wait already!

Thinking about doing a last minute application to eastern Michigan, but I spoke with the graduate admissions advisor and she said that they’d max give a 50% assistantship through the art department, but that you could apply, get in, then apply for a more administrative GA position through the school that’s fully funded. Apparently one of their current ceramics students did that, so hi if you’re here! (omg should I do it I’ve got a few weeks to send in my app, and apparently some of the staff could really work with what I want to do!)

Not sure if it interests anyone, but since a lot of these schools have more broad visual art programs, you can kind of forge your own path. I’m a 2D animator and seemed to be pretty well received in pursuing that at some of the more self-led programs while speaking to admissions/faculty from a couple of these schools— I wonder if anyone else is trying to do animation here!

Hope you’re all doing well. Manifesting I get in somewhere, but if not this was a great learning experience for next year!

Hi everyone, lurker joining now because I'm antsy from waiting. I applied to a bunch of schools, but Yale painting is the one I'm most excited about. Does anyone want to share about the kind of art they make? I work with a lot of different media besides painting and my work is visually diverse, but centered on core idea relating to identity.

glad more people are starting to post because I'm extremely curious as to where others are applying!

Most of what I make is collage and mixed media. I work around themes of autonomy, control, and power, and how we exist/relate to/cope with those ideas under late capitalism.

I applied to printmaking programs as I'd like to expand in that direction and it's sort of the closest discipline in terms of what I do.
