sara-z Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Has anyone received an invitation to interview for the master's degree in digital media at RISD? My friend has received it, but I have not yet. Does it mean that I have actually been rejected by the school? It seems that they have already interviewed 2.4 to 2.6? Is it because of batch review or the Rhode Island School of Design has closed its enrollment?

kamlee Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Hi for those of you that have interviewed before, what was that process like? I know it varies from school to school and all the programs are different but I have my first interview on Saturday and have no idea what to expect.

It's not her exact wordings but that's what I got. Also my friend didn't really like the recent MFA students' works, though she said more in the past the grad student's works were good and now doing really well in the market. BUT, I also have met another person who's gone to Hunter and said the program is good and recommendable.

I know it varies from school to school and all the programs are different but I have my first interview on Saturday and have no idea what to expect. I've done two for visual arts MFAs-- UCSB and VCU Kinetic Imaging. UCSB was two professors I had mentioned by name in my app, they basically asked, "why grad school/why now", "why UCSB", "tell us about your current research area/work", and "how do you work collaboratively/in a group" (to see how you'd mesh with other MFAs), and "how do you approach your individual process". It was very conversational, and the vibe was very fluid. It didn't seem to have a time limit so I think I talked with them for about 40min. VCU on the other hand, felt more like a formal job interview, was timed for 30 mins. They asked similar questions about the why grad school, tell us about your work etc, but they also asked more on the spot ones like, "what is an artist work or group show you are inspired by/would want to be a part of", "what are you reading right now" and "if you were to invite three people dead or alive to a dinner who would they be". They allotted a lot of time for me to ask them questions, so most of what I learned about the program was through me specifically asking. The interviewees were two professors and a grad student (I made sure to specifically ask the grad student questions about the culture/grad life). kamlee 1

One was two professors and it was very warm and though they asked broad questions (why grad now/why this school) there was a little back and forth within that discussion that made it comfortable. Another one I did was with 3 professors and the first question was really 5 questions wrapped into one - so broad! - and after I fumbled through a long answer they went right into the next question without a real reaction or response to my answer. I have no idea how to evaluate how it went because I felt like I was kind of bringing up what was already in my essay, there were no additional specific questions about what I submitted. I think you are very likely to asked to summarize your practice, why graduate school now, why that particular graduate school. I know I'm going to use what I experienced in these two interviews to help me prepare really well for the two I have next week! prosthetic_head and sarinnn 2

I've had two so far - the first, they only asked two questions, and then it was conversational. During the second, they asked me a bunch of questions and then asked me what questions I had for them. Some questions I remember being asked are... Why this school? What are you watching, or reading that is influencing your work? What is your work about & who is influencing your work? What recent exhibition have you been to? Tell us about it and the impact it had What exhibition have you recently been a part of? Is there anything else we should know about you? I didn’t see anyone rave about the program so it concerned me. It was either people felt meh about it or hated it. Good luck with your other programs!
