StrangeConfinedSpace Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Hello Everyone. This is my first year applying to MFA programs. I currently have one interview set up but I was wondering if anyone has heard back from Oregon, University of Maryland, Tulane, or University of Washington. I hope everyone is having the best of luck and hearing back from their desired programs. I know the whole process is very daunting, I feel we are all in most anxious part of the process. I feel very fortunate to even have an interview in my first go attempt at applying. Good Luck!

Out of the three I’m still waiting to hear back from two but my first interview reached out and I am waitlisted. I really hope I get in cause its my top pick. Good luck! Waiting to hear back is the worst I hope you get in!!! I feel a waitlist is likely in my cards at my top choice as well but fingers crossed for us both 🤞 Darrrr 1
Kalonde Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Just got an interview request from Cranbrook Painting. They did say in an email that people receive responses at different times so I wouldn't be too worried if you don't hear back.

Also-- idk if any of y'all are painters applying to the program but tbh I've heard a lot of mixed things about the strength of the UT program...(I didn't apply because I wanted to expand beyond Austin and also it's not a great program for new media artists). Same! I moved to Austin from mexico about 4 years ago for my photo undergrad at St Edwards and i am now applying to UT, mainly due to my work being driven by archiving and studies of photo history, but man im stressed, i havent heard anything back from them, do you know if they have a specific order in which they pick candidates to interview? now that i think about it its probably based on GPA? what do you think?

I interviewed with them on 2/1 and was waitlisted on 2/11. My guess is they already interviewed everyone, but you never know!

I'm waiting to hear from VCU, CMU, UPENN, UCONN, University of Georgia, and University of Florida Where did you receive your rejection from UNC ? I interviewed 1/21 and haven’t heard anything. I saw someone on Reddit got waitlisted as well, was this on your portal or an email?Â

freshman2024 Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I had asked about the UNC program in the contemporary art forum, as well as a few others. People have generally been really helpful. I don’t think there’s a specific thread but I’m also bad at using Reddit lol, I recommend that forum though ! manti 1
manti Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I've been preparing for interviews and I'm curious about why they want us to show more work during the interview. Is it to show that we are still working in the month and a half between submitting and interviewing? I have new work but I'm not sure what to include and what they want to see. But, in writing that, I suppose the answer is that they want to see exactly what we're interested in and working on now. What do you all think?

The process is more wild and all consuming than I could have imagined. I heard from Oregon a few weeks ago and had an interview last week Monday.

I've had 4 interviews but none have asked me what I was working on now, definitely didn't ask to show pictures. Two of them showed my slides during the interview so I could talk about my work but that's as far as it went!
nanaaaa Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Has anyone heard back from hunter for the zoom meeting dates? I haven't heard anything back yet after submitting the google formsÂ
frogpainter Posted February 13 Posted February 13 got a rejection from university of minnesota on the 11th 😔😔 assuming no for both VCU and michigan since I haven't heard anything from them. Holding out a tiny bit of hope for IU, it said someone from Indianapolis looked at my website the other day so maybe that's something??Â
Sleepyguy Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Curious if anyone who’s having success this application cycle would be willing to share their SOP/portfolio? This is my second unsuccessful application cycle, curious to see how successful applications are organized.

Interesting, I have some programs that want me to bring images of work that I didn't include in the portfolio. I think I can include recent work that I made in 2024, but I've been making new work because if I didn't think my existing work was good enough to include in my portfolio, I don't want to show it to them now. I agree with the other poster who said that this process was much more consuming and stressful than they originally thought. I can't wait for March.

This is my second unsuccessful application cycle, curious to see how successful applications are organized. I'm so sorry to hear that  The whole experience really roughs you up. For my essays I tried to be really specific about why I wanted to go to each school and in the end it felt like I wrote four separate essays, especially since all four had different length requirements. I got great advice from someone who said to look up each school's learning outcomes (they do vary a lot!) and to embed those into the essay as things I wanted to learn. I probably spent four months on my essays, did many rounds of edits on my own and had 5-6 people read them. For the portfolio I just kept hearing about having the best pictures possible so that was a huge focus for me. I re-photographed some work once I got better lights. Did you do any portfolio reviews with what you submitted? Those are so helpful. SMFA offered one hour portfolio reviews and I got a ton of 1:1 feedback in that session which ultimately helped my portfolio for all the programs I applied for. nanaaaa, prosthetic_head and figg 3
