newsome Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I am planning to apply to top PHD and MS programs in Statistics and I would want a reality check: School: Mid tier state school ranked 30-50 in US, 3.96/4.00 GPA, double major in Stats and Math Courswork: 1 year of Real Analysis(All A's), 1 year of Math Stats (All A's), Probability Theory(A+), 2 Measure Theoretic grad Probability classes (opted to Pass, and A-) Stochastic Processes(A+), Time Series(A-), Linear Algebra(A), Game Theory(A), Regression Analysis(A), Statistical Theory(A), Other various Data Analysis coures (A's) Research: I did some research at Bio Lab but not a lot materialized, and didn't have the position for long Worked as a stats/math/cs tutor I understand my research is weak for someone applying for a PHD but I want to genuinely want to know what are my odds for getting into a T10 PHD program or would it be better if I apply to a Master's program first and evaluate my options first?
bayessays Posted October 7 Posted October 7 Why not just apply to some PhD programs and a couple MS programs as backups? It's the same amount of work. Your math background is good, but you have no research experience, so I have a hard time seeing you getting into a top 10 program at the moment. A MS that allows you to get some research experience would help a lot. But why are you so set on top 10? Top 30 programs are all fantastic for 99% of applicants.
