Seeking out subject matter experts from different schools to avoid working with the expert at my school?

Would it look bad if I sought out a professor from another school for help with my dissertation if the one at my school is problematic? He's got a history of abusive behavior towards his students, and he isn't even that well established. But he's the only person who focuses on that work at my school.
