Sorry for assuming it was a troll post, my bad! I’ll reach out to the department since I haven’t heard anything either—feels like a silent rejection. Thanks for sharing, and best of luck with everything!

It’s all good pal, wish you luck

Has anyone heard back from UChicago, UMichigan, Northwestern, Georgetown, or Emory for the IR subfield today?

Wow the wait today is nerve-wrecking for me.

Do these programs usually send decision emails in the late afternoon/evening? If not, that's another day not knowing lol :( hard to stay distracted with something else.

Hi guys. I got words that Columbia will extend offers to applicants this year, as opposed to what I heard. The number of offers will be fewer than previous years (~20, as opposed to ~30), so as to control the number of eventual yields. They will also seek subfield balance among the incoming class (each subfield having a roughly equal number of students).

As for decisions, I don't know when they would be out. At this time last year, they were already out. But this year is complicated because of anticipated cuts, Trump, etc.

Hello guys. Has anyone else heard from the UCLA in the IR subfield? I was invited to their information session in early Jan, but then it became silent. I have seen a lot of invitations for their in-person preview in March, plus an IR acceptance, but I just want to make myself prepared for the worst news.

Thanks for this info! I have two questions- does lower number of initial offers mean greater chance for anyone who is waitlisted?

Also, are the anticipate cuts directly impacting Pol sci admissions? I thought most Pol Sci programs do not rely on it..

Okay, so I will answer to the best of my knowledge. I must preface by saying I am not involved in the admission process or know the technical process behind it well. I simply relay what I hear from my colleagues/faculties.

To answer your first question: I believe, no. I heard that they would try to limit the eventual yields to a certain number X (which I do not want to disclose publicly). The Graduate School will cover the cost for the X incoming students. For any students we eventually take over this X number (if more applicants accept our offers more than usual), the department will have to pay for them through their budgets, which is not ideal because that money is normally needed elsewhere. And this X is not a big number.

To your second question: Yes, the cuts are impacting our PoliSci admission. I don't know if this is true for other schools. I must admit I do not know much why. Apparently, the finance of CU is extremely opaqued. On paper, CU is extremely wealthy, so it should not be as badly impacted by the federal cuts,  but a lot of the assets CU holds are in real estate (2nd largest landlord in NYC, after the Church) and there is little liquidity.

Thanks very much for this detailed explanation of how things might be playing out. It is quite helpful and puts things into perspective. WRT #1- I asked the question because I thought there would fewer initial offers this year compared to a normal year. Perhaps in a normal year, they would not even go to the waitlist if they have the required yield from the initial list of offer holders? Maybe this year because the initial acceptances number would be lower, there could some more chance of getting into the waitlist? (and perhaps the waitlist would also be shorter). Thanks again!

I see what you mean. Yes, there will be fewer offers this year. But, because the required yield is also lower, they might not even go into waitlist this year. I think it is quite possible, since the desired yield this year is quite small. Hope this clarifies.

Thanks- this makes things quite clear!

Has anyone heard anything from Northwestern? They’ve sent out acceptances but no rejections yet. I understand (according to their website) they don’t send all decisions simultaneously. Has anyone received an update?

They tend to send rejections around last week of February or 1st week of March, based on my previous experience.

I applied it last year too, I received the official rejection quite a while after I saw offers released

Are all the offers for Northwestern already out? I saw 5 acceptances but no update after that.

I’m not sure about the dynamics this year round but from what I saw last year all the offers were released in one day. I also know someone personally accepted by NWU but didn’t post anything here so I expect actual offer holders, if not a lot more, can at least exceed 5. While scenario can be quite different across years, wish you luck on NWU and all of your options.

Not sure all offers out, but results posts write except IR field and possible waitlists?
