DamianD Posted February 18, 2011 Posted February 18, 2011 No news yet. May be tomorrow. Friday sounds like a good day to announce results. Their website's FAQ says that the decision is usually reached by mid-February. But we're already waaay passed mid-feb I hope to get accepted though, looking forward to a weekend in Houston, since I've never been there :-) unlikely that I will accept it in April though

From what I can observe in results section, every year there were some Rice admits reported by this time of the year. May be Rice has decided to admit nobody this year. "Ah, money is tight; folks, lets skip this year. Plus we can call ourselves more selective than MIT, with 0% acceptance rate."
Cevo Posted February 19, 2011 Posted February 19, 2011 I claim that as long as they have Moshe Vardi, they will have money
DezB88 Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Still not a single sign coming out of Rice What is happening this year???? Anybody has anything more on Rice???
gradSchoolBound Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 I e-mailed the grad ad coordinator today and she replied (in no more than 10 words approx.) that the applications are still being reviewed. DezB88 1
adinutzyc Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I know someone who got an accept from Rice this year... But I really don't know more, I think they're in theory. DezB88 1
DamianD Posted February 27, 2011 Posted February 27, 2011 Still not a single sign coming out of Rice What is happening this year???? Anybody has anything more on Rice??? Apparently they are taking their time and are pretty thorough. I received an email from a prof (other than I had an interview with Friday evening) to schedule a skypie upcoming monday and also received an email from another group today whether I would be interested in talking DezB88 1

I received an email from a prof (other than I had an interview with Friday evening) to schedule a skypie upcoming monday and also received an email from another group today whether I would be interested in talking Thank you for that info!! No interview request for me until now.. But curiously, did you apply for PhD only? I applied for the Master with thesis option, and stated that I intend to do a Ph D eventually. I hope it's because they don't waste time interview Master applicants Otherwise, I am gonna take another self-reject for me... Lone Star Dreams over Edited February 28, 2011 by DezB88
DamianD Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 5 minutes ago I received an email from a professor that I will receive my accept letter tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Two accepts to completely different programs... choosing will be harder than I thought...
DamianD Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 But curiously, did you apply for PhD only? Yes, PhD only. You'll get a MS degree along the way as well.
DezB88 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Yes, PhD only. You'll get a MS degree along the way as well. I know that but I applied for MS anyway, since I believe it increases my chance congrat But I hope Yale accepts you and Stanford gives you funding so you reject Rice, and they have to admit someone else More chance for me jk
gradSchoolBound Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 @DamianD: Did you receive your admission letter? Do you know the dates of visit weekend? Has anybody else heard from them? I don't see any recent entry in the result section either. Whats going on down in Texas?
fangsout Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Has anybody else heard from them? I don't see any recent entry in the result section either. Whats going on down in Texas? I don't know, I hope we will start receiving results this week. Rice is a perfect fit for my interests so I am really anxious!

I don't see any recent entry in the result section either. Whats going on down in Texas? Yes I have :-) also have full fellowship :-) As for your second question: To introduce you to our exciting research environment at Rice, the dynamic city of Houston, and our vibrant campus life, I want to cordially invite you to visit Rice for our "Getting Acquainted" weekend on March 18-19, 2011, at our expense.

gradSchoolBound Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 Has anyone else heard from them?? It is past Mid March and yet haven't heard anything from them I have not heard from them either. At this point, even if they accept me, I will probably decline. I would guess that many applicants will hear from them after their visitation weekend, which I believe is around March 18th and when other people start declining the offer or through mass rejection. Last time I contacted them, the lady at admissions office made the whole process sound like a plot of a suspense thriller - 'anything could happen, you know'. I was like whatever. Anyway, hang in there my friend!

fangsout Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 So, I'm planning on this being a reject. I wasn't invited to visitation weekend so I guess the reality is that I have an extremely slim shot of getting in at this point.

stacy_j Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 applied Rice CS master program... and haven't heard from it. sigh..
gradSchoolBound Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 I heard from them today. I contacted the POI yesterday asking him if I should accept offers from other universities. He replied to me saying that he wanted to see me at Rice and that there must have been miscommunication between him and the ad com. Today, I received the admission letter by e-mail. Pretty exciting. I don't know where I want to go now.

On your list Purdue is probably the only other contender-- I know that the HPC-type people at Wisconsin (i.e Livny, Miller) are no longer doing anything particularly exciting (outside from Wisconsin's amazing architecture group). UMass and Northwestern I don't hear much about. gradSchoolBound 1

So my decision has basically boiled down to deciding between Sarkar at Rice or Mark Hill, Wood and Karu at Wisconsin. I am interested in parallel computing, and language and architecture associated with it. You are also right about Livny and Miller's research. Livny's Condor project has moved beyond the research phase. It is like one giant product. Miller is doing some cool work, but its more like product development than research. I talked with both of them when I visited Madison.
