whitelephant Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 What are your thoughts on Emorys PhD program in Religion? How selective is it and how would you rank it against programs such as Syracuse, Harvard, Boston, Indiana, UCSB and UNC Chapel Hill?

I personally love Emory because I like many of the professors and their research. In addition, they have funding. The PHD program is quite selective -- maybe 1-2 people per discipline (NT/OT/Ethics/Homiletics/etc). Look for scholars. Look for money. Look for a place where you won't get burned out -- a PHD is academically rigorous, yes, but its not the academics that will kill you at the level you have to be to apply -- its burnout from getting older, having kids, getting married, having family members get sick, dying, etc etc etc. In other words, life happens! As far as I can tell, Emory is more competitive than the schools you listed except for Harvard. Although some select Emory over Harvard because of their focus, etc. There's only 2 or 3 schools that can compete with Emory's funding for PhD students.
