Hey!

I'll be coming here in the fall to start my Ph.D. in Marketing!

Just wondering if anyone else has decided on going to NU :) Also is everyone planning on living in Evanston? I'm a city-boy, so I might just live in downtown and take the L everyday (or just bike up Lake Michigan in the warmer months).

Hey!

I'm also heading to Northwestern in the Fall. I'm planning to live in the Lincoln Park or Lakeview areas with my spouse. It will make our commutes somewhat equal. We're also used to city life and aren't interested in the suburban experience of Evanston just yet.

Awesome! Yeah, I think I'm going to opt to not live in Evanston -- at least for now. Living in Chicago proper seems a bit expensive, so I've also been eyeing the neighborhoods in between. Rogers Park seems to be a good neighborhood with lots of cheap 2BR housing. I guess I don't really have that strong a preference as long as the apartment I stay in is no more than 5 minutes walking to the train/bus (don't want to have to traverse through tons and tons of snow during the winter!).

And yup! I'm a city boy, too (born and raised in LA; San Diego for undergraduate), so it's paramount that transportation to Chicago is convenient.

Oh! And if you're going to NU for Af-Am Studies, I actually have a friend (going to be a 3rd year in the fall) already in the program! I can introduce you two come the beginning of school.

Hey there, I'll be joining the NU grad community next fall as well. I'll be coming from Istanbul, a huge city, one of those that 'never sleeps'. While I'm having a blast enjoying the night life and all here in my hometown as an undergrad, I know I won't have as much time to go out as a PhD candidate. So my question is, how would Evanston compare to Chicago, would it be worth the 1hr commute to live downtown? Or is there absolutely nothing to do in Evanston? :) Thanks!

Evanston is a college town. There are restaurants, bars, and shopping. If you're used to metropolitan life, it's not that.

Whether or not the commute to and from Chicago is worth it is up to you. I'm foregoing it for at least the first few years so that I can spend more time on campus focusing on coursework; after that, I'll probably be living in one of the North-Chicago neighborhoods.

I go to NU. Less expensive options for living are Rogers Park and neighborhoods farther south of Evanston like Andersonville or Ravenswood. That said, relying on the Metra, L, or city buses is not ideal. I would recommend living in Rogers Park and taking the NU Shuttle (it stops at the law school in Chicago, Loyola (Rogers Park), and several stops in Evanston. Another option is finding roommates to share living expenses in Evanston. In my opinion, walking to campus is preferred when you have to be on campus every day. Biking in the winter? I know students who have done it, but they didn't like it. Good luck!

I'm interested in why you say this. I'm looking at apartments along the red line and transit times as far down as Edgewater and Lakewood seem pretty decent...is the L not on a reliable schedule or?...
