Waw Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Hey hey, Just wondering if there are other people about who've applied to the History of Consciousness program at UCSC this time around. I'm not holding my breath for a quick reply - they seem to take their time with everything realted to the applications.
parapraxis Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 i applied, and am still waiting for news. i worry that their dept. won't be around very long though-- most faculty retired. that is, since the UCs are facing sever budget cuts, a department like hiscon (whose faculty have fled) might come across as superfluous and get axed. still, balakrishnan is a solid professor and I would love to work with him. anyone out there apply to johns hopkins humanities?
withupsofloating Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I have heard on good authority that the department will remain viable for the foreseeable future. They are transferring faculty from other departments into HistCon. I believe that official decisions go out in March?
parapraxis Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 any word from ucsc hiscon yet? I'm a little frustrated with their department. Although i haven't emailed them recently, I did a few times over the course of last year and during the admissions process, asking for some clarification (things not specified on the website). I never heard back from them for any of my queries. What is up with them? Waw Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 I haven't heard anything from them yet. I've encountered much the same when contacting them while applying - when they did answer, they often took a long time to do so. Maybe they're still figuring themselves out in the midst of restructuring the department and finding finances? any word from ucsc hiscon yet? I'm a little frustrated with their department. I actually met a student at an admitted students visit this week that had also been admitted to the His Con program at UCSC. He said the program only admitted two applicants this year.
Waw Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Sounds like they've contacted the accepted students, but are taking their time with the rejections, which would be unsurprising considering their overall slowness. Only two admitted sounds about right if the department's contracting a bit. Still, no telling until they actually go through with it and send out all notifications. Waw Posted March 15, 2011 Author Posted March 15, 2011 Well, I'm officially rejected. Congrats if you got in!
bootsie Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 The word is that histcon accepted 10 people this year.
KRC Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I'd be shocked if the admitted 10 people with funding. I know two students who came to the department before UC went down the toilet and although they are taken care of (including being able to continue to work with prof's who have since retired), they say that there is basically 0 money and that the department is on its last legs. It really is a shame becuase this is a great department that is historically significant that just got caught in the bureaucratic nightmare that is California's budget. Five years ago this program was at the top of my list but I didn't even apply this year.
