AliciaRabbie Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Haven't heard anything from it yet, though there are posting both offers and rejects, as well as open house invitation, but ever since all silent. Anyone in the same situation or know what's going on?
TransnationalHistory Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Same, and I'm assuming rejection, especially since someone here said they only took one person from my field. I can understand letting the accepted/waitlisted people know first, but I don't get why they'd stagger rejections...but oh well.

rmcclymo Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I am assuming not having heard yet means a rejection as well. I haven't heard a peep either, but assuming no news is bad news :-( Maybe they are getting back at me for rejecting them in 2008?
Jeppe Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I haven't heard a peep either, but assuming no news is bad news :-( Maybe they are getting back at me for rejecting them in 2008? Ha! My thoughts exactly, bad blood since I declined an offer from SIPA in 2009.
Contate Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I called the history department and the said they would finalize decisions by the end of this week. It seems to me that they still have not informed students that applied directly to the history program. All the acceptances and rejections I have seen have been for joint programs. So, don't despair. Maybe I am just being to optimistic; who knows.

My only guess based on your new bit of information is maybe the first round was people they really wanted, and then they went back to figure out how much additional funding was available before making a final list. But that's just a guess.

But that's just a guess. The first round of admits and waitlists were notified two weeks ago. A finalized list might move waitlisted people into the admitted category. But one round of formal notices has certainly been sent out.
modern Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) I applied to the regular history PhD track and was notified that I was waitlisted a couple of weeks ago. First -officially- by the professor in charge of this year's Graduaate affairs, then by a couple of professors in my field that wanted to know if I'd actually give priority to the Columbia waitlist over an eventual offer by other institutions. "What are the chances of gal like you, and guy like me getting together?" "Oh, about one in a million!" Pause... "YES!!! So you're telling me there's a chance :-)"

thepoorstockinger Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 I e-mailed Columbia's history graduate administrator today and received a very prompt reply. I'd been operating under the assumption that since I hadn't been contact that I wasn't offered admission and it looks like my assumption was right. I don't know if this is useful to anyone else who is waiting to hear, but I'd suggest sending a polite e-mail or making a phone call just to get confirmation. Dear ____________, There appears to be a hold up on the part of the Graduate School. The department does not send out decision notifications. I can officially tell you that your name does not appear on my list of 2011 admitted PhD candidates. Best, Sharee -- Sharee M. So I sent them an email yesterday and received a reply this afternoon saying, "Decisions are still in progress. You will be notified via email within the next ten days."
Contate Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 The director of graduate studies told me: "I'm afraid the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences has been slow sending out their responses. You should be hearing soon." Who knows what it really going on. They seem to have given us each a different response. I am confused. On one hand, it is plausible that they make decisions on a rolling basis and are still evaluating applications, but on the other, it is quite suspicious that they mentioned that they have a list of admitted students. So I sent them an email yesterday and received a reply this afternoon saying, "Decisions are still in progress. You will be notified via email within the next ten days."
thepoorstockinger Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 So I sent them an email yesterday and received a reply this afternoon saying, "Decisions are still in progress. You will be notified via email within the next ten days." Hopefully this means that there is good news (or at least the possibility of good news) coming for you. The "GSAS has been slow" excuse strikes me as odd since so many admitted students seem to have heard already. I suspect (for no reason other than gut feeling) that some of us who have not heard yet but who have been rejected from the department are probably going be getting offers of non-funded cash-cow MAs.

Given that this was the case with Chicago, I wouldn't be surprised.
TransnationalHistory Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Finally, last decision reached. A rejection, but at this point I could sorta care less. I'm more glad the wait is over.
historyhopeful Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 Finally, last decision reached. A rejection, but at this point I could sorta care less. I'm more glad the wait is over. The wait was ridiculous. Thankfully, I've known now for a month due to contact with my POI there, but really? Took them this long to send out rejections?
cyborges Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 The wait was ridiculous. Thankfully, I've known now for a month due to contact with my POI there, but really? Took them this long to send out rejections? I don't get this. I haven't been notified by Columbia at this moment, and yet the results board and this thread seem to indicate people have been getting rejection letters. And I gathered that those rejection letters were emails, sending the applicant to a website. I've checked my email inbox, my spam box, and even my Columbia application (+ application status file), without any luck. Is anyone else experiencing this longer wait?
crom11217 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Yeah, I'm in the same boat - not a peep yet. I'm thinking if I haven't heard anything from my POI yet then it's bad news, but you never know...

I emailed the dept a couple of weeks ago, and was told that they were still reviewing files. Apparently though they were going to be done by the end of the first week in March.
cyborges Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Anybody else still not hear? yes, still. emailed them today but no reply. what is the deal?
