I see an acceptance post on the results search - congrats to the lucky admit! Did they give you any details regarding applicant pool or class size or anything?

That was me, and I had been meaning to make start this same post beforehand. It seems odd that no one had done so yet.

Anyway, the admit was just an email from the DGS mentioning funding and timelines. No other information was provided. I have to give an answer by March 16, so I'd say people will definitely start hearing around that time if not before.

I know what it's like to wait on info, so I'll do my best to get as much as possible. Good luck to all!

I haven't heard hide nor hair about the MA applicants and I haven't seen hardly any posts about people applying to UBC. There was one admit post to the PhD program today with a fellowship (congrats!), but that's all. I wonder where all the applicants are?

I completely forgot to post my results until just now. PhD rejection via e-mail almost a week ago. Good luck everyone else.

I just noticed it - Thanks for posting it, and commiserations on not getting in.

I'm still anxiously waiting to hear from them... I imagine my chances aren't great - I've heard bad things about funding for non-Canadians but, oh, I really, really like UBC!

Today I received an email from Mary Chapman with an offer of acceptance! So excited! Unfortunately no guaranteed funding as "our TA budget will depend on a few factors that should be sorted out in the next month or so" (she "hopes" to offer $10,900 per year). I have by Friday to accept another offer with full funding, so it looks like I have some tough decisions ahead of me.

Was that a PhD or an MA offer? Congrats either way!

I saw on the result board that they've made offers to 9 and have had 7 accept their offer.

I was one of those who accepted, but I was curious about the sub-fields of others who have accepted offers as well as those who are in the running (ie. waitlisted or have offer but undecided).

Just for the sake of curiosity.

I'm going into the PhD program and I'm a medievalist.

Hey. I'm waitlisted (and desperately want to get in!): my field is postmodern and contemporary lit and literary theory (ecocriticism/ space and place/ psychoanalysis). So, totally other end of the spectrum from you!

Nice! I hope you do. Is that MA or Phd?

Haha, yeah quite on the other end chronologically anyway. You'd be surprised at the connections of postmodernism and Medieval; they are much stronger, IMHO, than those between postmodernism and modernism (high-modernism anyway).

Yes, I notice a lot of Medievalists with interests that span the two - when you say the "connections" between postmodernism and Medieval are you talking about postmodern theory or postmodern literature?

I'm on the PhD waitlist. The department and university is just ideal for me, it will break my heart to get this close and then not get in. Congratulations on your acceptance! - Are you a non-Canadian applicant like I am?

Both, really. I just saw a pretty awesome seminar presentation on the structural connections of Niel Gaiman's "Sandman" to medieval 'king's journey' tales (think King Horn, Havelok, etc). But I think most people who study such things intensively (I am not one of them) emphasize the theoretical and 'world-view' connections between the two: loss of individualism, author-as-amalgamation-of-texts, etc.

I am an American and this was my only non-US application. I think the fact that nobody there saw my GRE scores helped out a lot. You gotta love Canadian schools for that!

Ha, yes, I'd be inclined to approach something like that from a psychoanalytic/ mythic/ archetypal criticism approach (probably because that's what I did my MA in!) - but that's probably veering a bit close to Joseph Campbell territory. I was just talking about something similar this week end with my fiance: I was trying to explain to him why Star Wars was basically a Medieval quest narrative by making the same kind of argument.

But yes, I can see what you mean - I would think the authorial voice area would be particularly rich, perhaps more so with dream visions than Romances...

MA program...I ended up getting funding and accepted the offer. My sub-fields are Ecocriticism/Social Ecology/20th C. American lit.

Haha, this describes my application perfectly. GRE is a scam!

I haven't yet posted on the results board, but I have been accepted to the PhD program. I do Asian Canadian lit/multiculturalism/dehumanization studies (which normally falls under posthumanism). I know there are at least 2 others who have been accepted and do some iteration of posthumanism, but more on the biotech side vs. animal discourse. There are also a couple other Canadianists who accepted their offers, and the grad chair said that most of the cohort focuses on 20th century lit.

Thanks for the update Ananda! and congratulations. Those fields sound interesting! I didn't realize 'animal discourse' had made it into lit studies yet--I don't suppose they are studying Animal Farm are they?;) ha ha. So are you still undecided?
