macmc Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Someone's in, according to the results page! I know the admissions blog said "early March"--has anyone else heard anything?
cmh07g Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Still waiting... Someone's in, according to the results page! I know the admissions blog said "early March"--has anyone else heard anything?
cch604 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Still waiting... I got my acceptance letter for the MA in International Security in an email tonight. I had applied back in November.

cch604 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Congratulations! Thanks! This was the first decision I received, and I wish everyone else the best of luck

Did your status change online before you got the email? Like did it say under review? I applied priority app and mine still says 'ready for review"

I applied priority app and mine still says 'ready for review" I think you're talking about the "decision:" part, right? If so, no, it did not change before I got the email. It has said "not available" for a while, at least a month now. Edited March 3, 2011 by cch604

abraxas Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I got into the Human Rights MA with the Founder's scholarship, so that's a really big incentive for attending Korbel. The only things that bug me is the April 15th decision deadline, whereas most other schools are around May 1st. I haven't even heard back from a lot of my programs yet and some of the visit weekends are only a week or two before that deadline. I noticed that the website says that you can switch focus within the MA program? How often does that happen, and is it easy to do?
flyers29 Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I noticed that the website says that you can switch focus within the MA program? How often does that happen, and is it easy to do? Yes it's pretty easy. Though better to do it no later than the 1st or second quarter depending on what classes are required for your program.
Benincredible Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I heard from them today. Got into the gftei with peace corps fellows. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting, you should be hearing soon.
mlerette Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Congrats on your acceptance. I'm a current security student here, so if you have any questions, feel free to shoot. I got accepted to Korbel with the Founders Scholarship for the Fall '11. I am curious about the DC program for second year students. When does one apply for the program? My other question concerns the foreign language requirement. What qualifies as "proficient?" Would it be the equivenent of 2 semester of the language of higher? Is there a written and verbal test? Is there an example of the written test? Can I take foreign language courses through DU while attending the program (would the course work allow for it)? I have taken Spanish and French but wouldn't consider myself "proficient" and will need a couple of semesters to brush up. MCL
cmh07g Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I am not in Korbel yet but I know someone who is. From my understanding it the test is easy to pass. You don't have to be proficient. I believe they allow you to take a dictionary into the test. You can take language classes at DU but they do not count for credit. I believe they allow you to take a dictionary into the test. You can take language classes at DU but they do not count for credit. This was more or less true for the European languages when I was there (I finished last March). However, the Asian languages are next to impossible under that format (can't exactly look up characters you don't know) and they actually scuttled the Arabic language entirely because it was also too hard. Unfortunately there is some bad blood between the language department (they administer it) and Korbel so things have changed frequently. They did have sample tests available at the language department--I passed French relying on my 4 years of high school French (meaning I hadn't taken a formal class in several years) so it wasn't too bad for the languages that poster was asking about.
HopefulIR Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 You apply for it at the end of the 1st quarter. You do an internship + take some courses. They say it's competitive and that it's ranked by GPA (the end of your 1st quarter GPA), but everyone pretty much gets in. You have to apply for the internship yourself, but the career development office helps out. An relevant internship is required to graduate, so everyone applies for a summer one. Many apply for the Fall DC program as well (just in case their summer applications are rejected, but I know a few people who will possibly do both just for more work experience. I recommend trying to do both if you're coming straight out of undergrad with less than 2 years work exp.) As for the language requirement, 1. you can get it waived if you majored in a language for undergrad, 2. bilingual/international student (assuming you're from a country that does not speak English), 3. pass 3rd year language course with a B or better, 4. a Berlitz proficiency test (I know 2 people that might do that), 5. take the proficiency exam. @Flyers29, my Middle East concentration buddies say there's a new Arabic test. I'm not 100% sure since I'm not a ME person myself, but if there isn't a test, I think about 3-4 people are screwed. Are ya'll security students? Who knows what that entails. I am stoked to research the school and what it has to offer. I love to ski on snow instead of ice so the Korbel is looking better every day. Still waiting on other acceptence letters. I have only taken a couple of semesters of French and Spanish so I am a bit leary of the language requirement. I can ask for a bathroom while visiting Rocky Point but I couldn't talk my way out of captivity when I am kidnapped by drug lords. I wish the best to all who apply. There seem to be many more acceptences on the horizon and diversity is a wonderful. MCL
Abu Bakr Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 In at Korbel for PhD program. Generous funding. Think I'll accept.
cmh07g Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 My myweb page changed earlier today. At the bottom it now reads accept offer of admission or decline offer of admission. But at the top it still reads no decision. I called the graduate offices today but I was sent to voicemail. Has this myweb change happened to anyone else?

According to a thread I remember reading from last year, it means you're in! Someone from admissions last year said that it just means the system got ahead of itself. Welcome to the club!
benaro Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I got in with some generous funding. Still waiting to hear from SAIS, GW, SIS, and NYU. At least, I can relax now.
koalaisnotabear Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I think I got in.....there were two tabs at the bottom on my DU Page saying ACCEPT OFFER OF ADMISSION or DECLINE OFFER OF ADMISSION. I have yet to receive a letter. I OF COURSE clicked accept.....and then was directed to a page to enter an admissions deposit. Did I get in or what?

koalaisnotabear Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Yep, you're in! Congrats! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! THANK YOU! this was my first chice! I love the city and the school! :) :)
macmc Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! THANK YOU! this was my first chice! I love the city and the school! :) :) Awesome! Yeah, the same thing happened last year according to previous posts on this board--their system got ahead of itself and allowed people to accept the offer before the offer was officially extended. Sort of anticlimactic IMO, but great nonetheless! I think I'm going to face a tough decision once I finish hearing from my other schools...what makes Korbel your top choice? I have a friend going there right now--she likes it a lot, but says the quarter system is extreeeeemely intense.
