mightysoy Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I had some free time and have been lurking for a while, so I figured I'd just register and post on this topic. I've noticed a couple of people wondering about TST's timeline; I've been told by one of the colleges that they're meeting at the end of this week (which presumably is today?) to make decisions on financing for doctoral students, with notice going out sometime next week. The others might have a similar timeline. Also, from what I've heard, funding at Emmanuel is quite good compared to some of the other colleges. Who knows, though -- St. Mike's just sold their parking lot, so maybe they'll have some extra cash. Um, also, just wondering: has anyone heard from Union about PhDs?

Thanks, I've been wondering about this. I want to confirm that I will be heading up there but want to hear about money first. Which college told you they were meeting? Hooray for selling the parking lot ... hope that helps:)
aselfmadewinter Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Well, from experience, I'd say don't hold your breath about getting financial information before the April 1st deadline. I'm currently doing my MA there, and the first year I was there, I got financial information before April, but this year, I didn't get it until late July, apparently because the committee was delayed from meeting for whatever reason. I'd contact your college of choice and see what they say. That being said, for AD students, the funding towards tuition is usually quite good. However, don't expect any kind of stipend unlesss you're at Emmanuel.

I'm in the same boat as you -- I want to accept, but am waiting to hear about funding. Did you apply to St. Mikes? Re: tuition remissions, do you know if the TST will cover tuition on top of a stipend at Emmanuel?
Bender Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Yeah St. Mike's to do ecotheology/animal theology stuff. Im accepting no matter what but would like to head about funding first.
mightysoy Posted March 7, 2011 Author Posted March 7, 2011 Very cool, Dennis O'Hara is great. Let us know if/when you hear about monies!

Re: tuition remissions, do you know if the TST will cover tuition on top of a stipend at Emmanuel? I'm not sure if Emmanuel covers tuition on top of the stipend, but I doubt it. It's already a pretty hefty sum they offer (20k, isn't it? The number escapes me now). My college is St. Mike's, and I can't say with any confidence that funding information will be available before the deadline, it might be or it might not be *shrug*. But TST generally tries to give everyone something, and it's usually pretty decent. As an MA, I had almost all of my tuition fees covered, which was really nice. Keep in mind that TST doesn't have a while lot of money, and that they have a LOT of MDiv and MTS students who they also want to fund. People here always complain about the funding, it's probably the number one thing we gripe about, but it's really not that bad. Emmanuel might get the funding info out sooner because they have less students than St. Mike's. In any case, I doubt I'll be there come September, but Toronto's a great school, the profs are excellent, and the library system is gargantuan. Just keep in mind that it isn't the richest school, but that it is usually pretty fair when it comes to funding.
Bender Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 St. Mikes just finalized their offers, so if thats your college you should know soon. I've heard nothing but bad news for Americans but I managed to get a full bursary. So excited to be there in the fall!

The past two years I've had to wait for the financial info to come in the mail. By the way, congrats to the both of you on getting in. It's a great school, and if I decide to leave it, I'll miss it dearly.

I emailed the AD director at St Mikes to ask a couple of questions one of which was the time frame for aid so I could accept the offer. He said he signed the letters 10 minutes before he responded to me and told me in the email. He said I would get a PDF via email while waiting for the actual letter. I'll look forward to meeting you two if you are there this fall.

Funding and a research fellowship -- I'm really excited!
aselfmadewinter Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Congratulations! I also got my letter this morning in the mail. Funding and a research fellowship -- I'm really excited! Very nice! I probably should've jumped ship and gone over to Emmanuel, but I don't know if I'll be sticking around anyways. What field are you in? Emmanuel has some great profs.

What field are you in? Emmanuel has some great profs. Broadly speaking, contextual theology; more specifically, I'm interested in Asian theologies in North America and Canada. It's too bad you won't be staying -- there are good resources here and in the Department/Centre for NT studies. Are you leaning towards McMaster?
aselfmadewinter Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I'm not really sure yet, I just haven't at all made a decision. To be honest, I'm leaning towards UBC. I'm in New Testament studies, and UBC has a really neat interdisciplinary approach to Bible courses, plus the school's rep is better than McMaster's. Funding is a problem for me at TST, since I'm in debt because of my MA, and I've already got both my BA and MA from Toronto. Like I said, St. Mike's doesn't fund as well as Emmanuel. I actually just found out about Emmanuel's funding about a month ago, and it was too late to apply over there. I'd like to stay, but I need SSHRC. UBC and McMaster, on the other hand, have given me some great funding offers, and UBC being #2 in Canada isn't bad... but Toronto's clearly the country's top school. I just don't know yet.
