dewberry Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Does anyone have any impressions on what it's like to attend NCSU, what the sociology department is like, what it's like to live in Raleigh, suggestions, whether the stipend ($12,700) is adequate, etc.? Any thoughts related to NCSU or Raleigh much appreciated.
Roll Right Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 12,700 a term or for a year? Thats a small stipend if its for a year....
tmor6 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 My brother and his wife live in Raleigh and I know the cost of living is quite high, at least in my opinion. They pay $925 for a 1 bedroom apartment (including utilities). That stipend amount seems very low to me.
Roll Right Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Thats extremely low for any area. I get 10,000 a year for an MA program and that doesn't come anywhere near covering the cost of living in Wilmington.

The national poverty threshold for 1 person was recently $10,830 a year, so yeah I'd say it's gonna be pretty difficult to live anywhere on that stipend alone. Loans suck, but that may be an alternative to barely scraping by.

Sure, but in some areas you can live on the $12,700 where the cost of housing is cheap; however, Raleigh has a rather expensive CoL compared to say, Norman Oklahoma.
