Marie77 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hello-- I am looking at NC State for a Masters in Literature. I am seeking input on the program, department community, helpfulness of faculty, and overall experience being a T.A. I'd also like feeback on living in Raleigh, cost of living, and local culture/ resources. Thank you!
skeletonkeys Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hi! I'm just going to address the area. I'm a native North Carolinian, and I love my state. Raleigh is a great city with tons of cultural opportunities, especially when you include nearby Chapel Hill. Raleigh alone has great museums like the NC History museum, NC Art museum, and African American cultural complex, some of my faves. There are also things like the NC symphony, theatre, and even ballet, if that's your thing. It's definitely a smaller city, with less of a hopping downtown area than Charlotte or Atlanta, but there's a certain laid back charm to the slower pace. As for the cost of living, living in the Northeast for several years has given me a new appreciation for the low cost of living, even in a city, in the South. Apartments are fairly cheap, even nice ones. Anecdotally, I know people with 1-3 bedroom apts in the 500-900 range in Raleigh and Chapel Hill. It may be getting pricier, but compared to most parts of the country, you can get a large space for a great price. But the quality of life here in NC is the real draw. That and the wonderful BBQ Hope that helps!
lolopixie Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Completely non-academic related fact about nc state: the school by laws require a certain number of bricks be laid each year, so they literally have brick gardens. Guess the brick masons still need to have their bricks put to use.
courtniep Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Hi Marie77! Congrats on your acceptance! I went to NCSU for undergrad in lit. The department has changed a bit since I've graduated in 2009 and faculty has shifted some, but it's a pretty campus, and I love Raleigh. Tons of amazing food, great music venues, plus you're close to Chapel Hill, which is one of my favorite cities. There are some great places to live near campus that are totally affordable (I rented a 1BR within walking distance for $600/mo). What area are you studying? tuanjim Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Anyone who has been offered funding considering declining the offer? I've been accepted but am currently on the waitlist for funding for MA in English.
sportsnerd Posted March 26, 2011 Posted March 26, 2011 I am currently in the MA program at NC State and cannot say enough kind words to do it justice. The professors are wonderful/mega approachable - they're always ready to help out, provide guidance, encourage research, etc. The English grad student association is also really active & great for getting to know people outside of an academic setting. It's a wonderfully friendly & supportive environment. If you're interested, please PM me for more details.
