Pertaining to International Relations, have any of you applied to the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships offered at your respective programs? If so, which language or area of interest are you going to concentrate on?

I know that the FLAS Fellowship pays for 24 graduate credits per year with a $15,000 stipend annually to boot.

I applied for the FLAS at the University of Washington China Studies program and also at Stanford--both for Mandarin study. Still waiting on the admissions decisions from both schools...

Where did you apply?

I've been accepted to the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. I applied for a FLAS for Pashto. Mandarin is a great language, for it is the language that got me interested in language acquisition; however, I switched to Arabic and have continually pursued it. I wished the Maxwell School at Syracuse offered a FLAS for Arabic, but they do not. Hopefully, Pashto will be fulfilling like Arabic and Mandarin are, but only time will tell. Good luck to you!!

I'm a FLAS fellow at Stanford's Center for Latin American Studies (I'm studying Portuguese). It's a great program and if you budget well, you can even have left-over money (I have even paid my credit card and I'm going to travel with some of it). Good luck to you guys!

I was admitted to Duke for the MIDP with partial funding, and am awaiting my FLAS result for Turkish. I got an email yesterday that my FLAS application has been "forwarded to the selection committee," and I should find out early April the final result.

Don't like all the waiting.

I am awaiting for a FLAS for Pashto, but after thinking it over for a while I kinda wished I had put Hindi. My reasons for this is that I know Arabic, so with the combination of Hindi and Arabic I would be half way to Urdu. I hope that the Syracuse will allow me to switch if I receive the FLAS.

Good luck everyone!

Any news out there about Georgetown's FLAS selections for Arabic? When do they usually make the decisions? Has anyone going there this fall heard from them yet?

I was selected to receive a Turkish FLAS from the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Center at Duke, but the award letter has a caveat that they "anticipate" receiving funding for all their FLAS fellowships this year, but are awaiting formal confirmation from the Department of Education.

Given the large cuts to title VI that have been approved in the new budget, I'm worried.

Anyone else in the same boat?
