UNLV Funding

Just wanted to chime in, I'm not a candidate this year - but I went three years with all rejects until my third year and then had a great year - so hang tough.

I just thought I'd let you know that last year, I was accepted into UNLV (Nevada Las Vegas). The funding was a 60% tuition remission, and a GA'ship of which I never determined the amount or workload. They were VERY nice and wonderful, and have some very interesting opportunities to meet authors etc. I declined on funding. Unless something has changed, I think that may be what you can expect. I hope this is helpful.

My thesis adviser really pushed UNLV (I like some of the profs there, and the BJJ is a great resource but UNLV is still way behind my two waitlisted schools), and he said that he heard I was essentially already admitted. That said, I won't be taking out more loans to do a PhD program, so if it's not a 100% tuition waiver with a reasonable stipend, then it won't matter if I am admitted there or not.

I agreed (now and then). I was really forthright that I simply wouldn't be paying tuition, and they said they would try to find me a little more money but there was little they could do about the tuition. I had to decline. It seemed to strange to me that they would operate that way, when every other place gives a waiver to their PhD students.

It's also worth noting that UNLV is proposing to close its Philosophy & Women's Studies Departments, as well as the Nevada Institute for Research on Women to cope with severe budget cuts from the state. I didn't apply there, but I know this would impact my decision.

Just saw this article that has me even more concerned about UNLV--they are apparently the school most likely to essentially declare bankruptcy to get out of contracts/lay off tenured professors. I would be VERY concerned that whatever "guaranteed" funding offered would be safe for the duration of the degree.

Anyone heard anything from UNLV? This is the last school I'm waiting on. 9 rejects, 1 admit, and UNLV.

Nope. Mine still says "Ready for Graduate School Evaluation." I've been trying to figure out if they want me to fill out the application for aid now or when/if I'm admitted. I'm also kind of hoping that one of my wait lists makes it possible to not need to worry about UNLV and their financial issues. Love the look of the program, but the funding issues scare the hell out of me.

So.... anyone hear anything at all? Or is it safe to say that UNLV is going to one of THOSE schools this year?
