Hey y'all,

So I lucked out and was admitted to my top choice school--but the offer is still technically "unofficial," as in I've only heard from the department, not the grad school at large. I told them I needed time to think it over, but I know I'm ready to accept. Do I need to wait for the official offer, or can I just accept now?

I think you have to wait for the official offer. They typically have something set up online where you have to indicate that you're accepting the offer. Did you get a link to that as yet? If not, that may come with the official offer.

Yeah, you can certainly let you know the department, POI, etc., that you're fully intending to accept, but nothing's official until you accept officially (I know, redundant). Universities are bureaucracies: you have to make an official statement of acceptance, not just an informal response to the department. Sometimes it's an online process, as newms suggests, sometimes you actually have to write a letter, sign it, and send it to the school.

Well, the department chair sent me an official-looking PDF complete with financial information, but when I read it closely, I realized they were telling me that approval from the graduate division was pending, etc. It did say to let them know my decision in writing ASAP so I'm not sure if they use an online system. It's a little confusing!

If you are truly ready to commit, reply to that email saying so and ask if there is anything else you need to do, I'm sure they will be happy to guide you through their school's process. Congratulations on your acceptance and your decision!

Yeah, I am in a similar situation where I have to respond by email to accept the financial offer from the department as well as indicate on an online system for the grad school that I'd be accepting the offer. If you're certain you want to attend there you could respond to the department's financial offer now and then respond to the official offer from the graduate school when it comes.

Thanks! I think this is exactly what I will do. Good luck to everyone else!
