You can see in my signature which schools I've been admitted to. The offer from McGill has so far been the best, plus they've been very warm and welcoming (well, as much as it's possible to be welcoming via email).

I think my decision is pretty much set, but I'd still like to torture myself by hearing some further opinions, good or bad regarding McGill's overall reputation. Here in Canada, I think McGill is generally in the top 3 or higher of our universities (especially if you go by the MacLeans survey). However, I know that in the US, McGill is not always well-known. I'm wondering if that has changed at all.

I'm also looking to hear your opinion regarding their English program, specifically.

Any comments are welcome. Thanks. :)

I live in the US and have applied to a few Canadian schools. My perception is that McGill is an incredible school, certainly in the top 3 among Canadian universities. It also seems to be very well known among people I've spoken with. I'm in the sciences and so cannot speak to the English programs but I say congratulations on your acceptance and a wise decision!

Like the above, I'm also not in English so I don't know about the reputation of that department specifically, but McGill is as well-known as a Canadian university is going to get in the US, especially in the northeast. I think Toronto may be slightly more well-known, but they're pretty close, anyway.

No idea about their specific programs. Maybe it's because I'm from the Northeast, but I think McGill is pretty well known and well-regarded around here.

I really appreciate the feedback, guys! :)

Oh, and Wtncffts, my advisor went to Western for part of his PhD. He thinks it's a great school. I've heard a lot of good things about it. Good luck there!

Thanks, same to you. I'm quite excited about Western. I can't lie and say it was my first choice (I probably would have chosen UBC, had I been accepted, for family obligations), but the research fit is excellent and the school and city seem quite nice.

I don't know how much rankings matter, but doesn't McGill consistently rank in the top 100 universities in the world? As far as English goes, I've heard some good things about there, I know someone who really wants to get into the translation program (for French and English) because they are the school with the best combination, but I'm Canadian so...McGill probably looms larger up here.

I agree with most posters here - McGill has a good reputation worldwide in general. I can't say for certain about English though, since I'm in another field.
