I've been frantically checking the status of my applications, just like everyone else, for the past month. Yesterday, I received admission from my dream school, but there was a catch. I had been admitted to the masters program. I though that I had been declined for the Ph D program and was just automatically considered for the Masters. At first this didn't worry me, but then I realized I would have no funding and tuition is >$40,000 per year.

Today I found my mistake. On the application there is a drop down box to select which program you want to apply to. I must have selected Ph D in materials science and then moved away from it accidentally by scrolling around with my mouse! I called the department today and pleaded with them to consider me for the Ph D program. They said that all of the decisions for the Ph D program had not been finalized and I could still be considered.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else? Do you think I have a chance to get into the Ph D program now? Thanks guys!

That really sucks! I guess you have to take them at their word when they say that decisions for Ph D has not been finalized and that you could be considered. Depending on your field it might be worthwhile to reach out to a PoI at this time and let them know that you'd like to be considered for Ph D - this could be risky, but it could help you with your unique situation. Good luck!
