IslandScholar Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 (edited) Hey everyone, I know many people have brought up the Clarendon Scholarship in several threads, but I was just wondering if you could help me with a few unanswered questions. You see, the date (March 31) is fast approaching for the humanities and social science applicants and I am waiting nervously in anticipation. 1) What kind of applicants are they looking for? I know they say on the website that academic achievement and student motivation are some of the main qualities they are analyzing, but in 'real terms' what does that mean exactly? 2) How is the selection process made? I heard that for the Rhodes scholarship at Cambridge, each department makes a recommendation to the Rhodes committee listing their top 1 or 2 applicants. The woman in charge of fellowships and scholarships at my university told me this when I asked her for advice. Is this the same with the Clarendon scholarship? 3) If I got offers from two courses in the same department, and let's say I got the Clarendon... would I be allowed to choose between the two or would the Clarendon award be only for a particular course? For reference, the courses are MPhil in Development (2 years) and Msc in Global Governance and Diplomacy (1 year) 4) What's the ratio of one-year/two-year successful applicants versus PhD successful applicants? Does the Clarendon committee have a preference (ie: is it easier for one versus the other)? I would appreciate any insight you have to offer. Good luck to all the Clarendon hopefuls, let's cross our fingers! Thanks! Edited March 28, 2011 by IslandScholar
abraxas Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Have you heard back? Its March 31st and I haven't received any information....so that doesn't bode well. Then again, they didn't inform me that I was accepted until a week after the official date they were supposed to.

I called them this morning and the guy said that they're probably just finishing up making decisions today - which means that they wont send out the notifications until tomorrow or early next week. Btw congrats on getting into Georgetown! Did u get into the MSFS? I'm finishing up my BSFS now, hoya saxa!

No, didn't get into MSFS (not enough experience) but got into the Governance and Democracy MA program (unfunded). Thanks for letting me know though; hopefully I don't hear back on April Fool's Day, given that my anxiety is already unbearable...
lapoeta Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Hi all, I'm also waiting out the Clarendon... Anyone else make any phone calls today to see what the situation is for Social Sciences? I'm hoping they won't keep us waiting over the weekend... Good luck everyone! No, didn't get into MSFS (not enough experience) but got into the Governance and Democracy MA program (unfunded). feminist21 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Hi all, I'm also waiting out the Clarendon... Anyone else make any phone calls today to see what the situation is for Social Sciences? I'm hoping they won't keep us waiting over the weekend... Good luck everyone! Yeah the Clarendon page has not been updated since 25 March, and I am desperately waiting for Humanities decisions! Good luck to all of us still waiting on Clarendon!!
IslandScholar Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 I havent heard either! I guess if we dont hear in the next hour or two (when their office closes), we'll have to wait over the weekend! feminist21 Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I havent heard either! I guess if we dont hear in the next hour or two (when their office closes), we'll have to wait over the weekend! I would still be hopeful to wait over the weekend since my admission email came over the weekend, I think. And with time difference, it makes it all the more confusing...I hope they don't delay the decision date(s) any further...I am dying to find out and want to make a final decision about picking a school already!...it's been a long wait.
IslandScholar Posted April 1, 2011 Author Posted April 1, 2011 Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. My admission email came on a Saturday. It's just frustrating because they don't tell you if you don't get the Clarendon. I would still be hopeful to wait over the weekend since my admission email came over the weekend, I think. At least we know we can still be hopeful because the Clarendon page does not say anything about all successful applicants having been notified as of now...I hope they'll update that page soon...all we can do is wait as of now. =/ Is your program housed in Social Sciences or Humanities? lapoeta Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 Anyone hear anything yet? I'm the the Social Sciences, by the way...
IslandScholar Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 Same here, I havent heard back and I'm also in the social science division. I called them just now and the woman said that all results will be emailed this week, so if we don't hear anything by the end of the week then we know we didnt get the clarendon. By all results, did they mean both the Social Sciences and the Humanities divisions? Thank you for the update! I have refreshed the Clarendon page way too many times since 1 April.
IslandScholar Posted April 5, 2011 Author Posted April 5, 2011 By all results, did they mean both the Social Sciences and the Humanities divisions? Thank you for the update! I have refreshed the Clarendon page way too many times since 1 April. I think it's for both because the person that I called last week said that the results are going to take awhile because social sciences and humanities essentially get announced at the same time. Do you think that they've emailed out notices already and we just all happen to be among the unsuccessful lot? Sorry to sound pessimistic!
lapoeta Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I don't think we should give into despair yet... I just emailed a friend who is a fellow in the law dept at Oxford (which means he knows something about the Clarendon process) and he said that he remembered that in some cases awardees didn't hear back until May! So there could be some disorganization going on, or sorting out with colleges who goes where - who really knows what's happening over there. Also, according to my friend they are apparently on Easter break at the moment - I don't know if this is affecting anything, but I guess we'll just have to wait it out for now.

I am going to be incredibly pissed off if I accept an offer from another school (which have looming deadlines) and then get an email telling me I received the Clarendon. ...
IslandScholar Posted April 6, 2011 Author Posted April 6, 2011 The results site was just updated: **Update** 5 April 2011: ALL HUMANITIES CLARENDON SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE NOW BEEN MADE. 28 successful applicants have been offered a scholarship and all of these candidates have been sent a funding offer letter from Graduate Admissions & Funding. Anyone here among the 28 successful humanities applicants? So far no updates about social science scholarships. They should probably be updating it in the next hour or so, or tomorrow?! Let's hope.
abraxas Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 UPDATE: Social Science Scholarships have been given out, and I'm not one of them. About 37 have been given out. Any lucky gradcafe patrons get any funding?
abraxas Posted April 6, 2011 Posted April 6, 2011 Well, there's the slight chance some of us are on a reserve list and we might get offers if others turn it down (I can't imagine that happens too often, though), but it looks like its over. Are there any other sources of funding for us Yanks that anyone might know about?
