can'twaitanylonger Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 I've been accepted to both and cannot really make up my mind where I want to go. So, I was wondering if other people could share their stories of how they came to choose one program versus another. I want to study gas injection or CO2 sequestration. After getting my degree, I want to work for a large oil company. Which school, do you think, will better prepare me for that? Also, feel free to share your own difficulties making your decision!!

Congrats on you admissions. In my opinion, UT and TAMU are the best places you can do some excellent research in Petroleum. You will also receive good exposure and mentorship. Those big companies do give preference to these schools for recruitment. However, UT seemingly is more tuned into research whereas TAMU better emphasizes the training of industry professionals. I've also been accepted into TAMU for the same program but no information from the department yet. Have you received any funding notification? Edited March 29, 2011 by tabarity can'twaitanylonger 1

Yes, TAMU gave me research assistantship that covers stipend, tuition, insurance and other academic fees. Pretty good deal considering I'm in a MS program. I've contacted two current students and they said, usually we have to find our own funding by talking to professors (for MS student). If you're a PhD student, you'll probably get a similar, if not better, offer to what I got. I got my notification of funding via email just last week (it came with the acceptance letter from the department), so I'm sure you'll hear back sometime soon too. As for UT, I haven't gotten anything back about funding. Hopefully, I'll hear about it soon so that I can make my decision by April 8th... Thanks for your input! I couldn't have imagined a new MS student in Petroleum Engineering could be fully funded. It doesn't get better for a PhD, I'd wager. You must be a top candidate. Congrats man. Hope I get something similar too very soon.
can'twaitanylonger Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 UT seemingly is more tuned into research whereas TAMU better emphasizes the training of industry professionals. Just curious - on what basis do you say that? Did you talk to any of the students or anyone in the oil industry?
can'twaitanylonger Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 Yay! I was just offered a fellowship at UT Austin!
tabarity Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Yay! I was just offered a fellowship at UT Austin! Great! Lucky you. Is it full funding? If it is, then you have got a decision to make between two programmes many greatly covet. Congrats and wish you the best while I hope I get mine too soon.

The fellowship basically covers the first-year tuition and fees with the idea that I will get some form of assistantship in subsequent years. But, I'm also hoping to get some RA/TA for this year. Gonna fly to Austin in two days and try to convince some profs to give me more money. haha Did they get back to you about funding? Are you set on TAMU? Edited April 4, 2011 by can'twaitanylonger

Are you set on TAMU? Yea, I got a notification last week. It was a small fellowship. It will not cover my tuition even though it's gonna be at the in-state rate. I am trying to contact Profs. for possible TA/RA positions. I'm in love with PE-TAMU but money is the challenge now.
tabarity Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 So friend, have you decided where to go (if I may ask)? Just curious: TAMU or UT?
can'twaitanylonger Posted April 21, 2011 Author Posted April 21, 2011 I decided on UT. They have more active researches in the field I am interested in. Plus, I think living in Austin will be a lot more fun than living in College Station, not that there is anything wrong with CS. I heard finding RA and TA is not that difficult for Pet.E programs. If you don't get a RA in the fall, you'll probably be able to get one in the spring. Talk to other grad students! I found that most useful in making my decision.

I don't know if this is out of line, but I was wondering what your GPA/GRE/Workex is like for you to have gotten into both schools. I will be applying to TAMU (and probably UT as well) and am wondering where I fit in the pack. I am quite nervous about admission.
