HassE Posted April 8, 2011 Posted April 8, 2011 Hello all, So as mentioned before, I got accepted into University of Michigan for an MSEE and as of today it was my number 1 school of choice, no funding was offered though. However, today I received an email from the University of Iowa saying that I got accepted into the PhD program with Full Financial Assistance. I'm so confused now. U of M is a top 10 prestigious school and I was looking forward to going there, but there school is so expensive would cost me 60K+ At University of Iowa I'd not only go to school for free, but they'd pay me 17K+ for every 9 months, how do you turn that down? Thats an overall difference of over 80K PLEASE HELP

Chicagobizdude Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 bump Are you serious????? First off, most academics do not place much value in rankings. The people who matter, e.g. the ones associated with your primary professional association, know more about the quality of a school's program than the writers at US News. But since you seem to value rankings,..... ..I don't know much about engineering specifically, but Im sure the U of Iowa is probably a top 20-30 or so in that field. Or at least respectable. If not, the brand name will is there. While theres a difference between a #3 ranked school veers #98, I don't think theres too much of a difference between a #10 and a #25. You're talking about $80K for basically a similar education. Do you want you want, but I know what I would do.
