symbolic Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 What are you interested in? Each has its own strengths. For example, both are strong in NLP, but JHU has the advantage there. I can't speak to the other criteria of yours, but it'd probably be useful for others to know what your interests are.
BKMD Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 Both have pros and cons, so it really depends on your area. Knowing nothing else, I would say UPenn is better; I think they have a better program generally and a better reputation, but JHU might be better if you're interested in NLP or biomedical stuff. Philly is nicer than Baltimore, but Baltimore is in the D.C. area and would be good if you think you are interested in government jobs.
alokkapur Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 Thanks for your response i would be keen to pursue artificial intelligence/robotics/human machine interface JHU offers a broad program in CS where i can take electives of my choice upenn has a custom program in robotics can you guide me if JHU is better overall or if UPENN offers better job prospects incidentally tution with 50% aid at JHU is just about same as tution with no aid at UPENN i need to revert by 20th with my decision help... alok i have 2 admits one from jhu and other from upenn-both for MSE in computer science can someone knowledgable help me with selection process which is better and why 1. course content 2.faculty standing 3.job scene 4.quality of life 5.costs urgent response appreciated alok frenzydude 1
barber5 Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 I'd say upenn by a pretty wide margin based on you criteria and interests
alokkapur Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 thanks is it true that cs department at JHU is more focused on medical related research? also is it better to do MS with broad specialization meaning studying little bit of everything to enhance your job spectrum or doing MSE in robotics from UPENN would still fetch good jobs eventhough from a narrower spectrum of companies? is philadelphia better than baltimore? the faculty at jhu a n upenn seem equally renowned choice is difficult.... help.. I'd say upenn by a pretty wide margin based on you criteria and interests
newms Posted April 19, 2011 Posted April 19, 2011 (edited) Is funding an issue at either of the schools? If the expenses were do-able at both places, I'd choose UPenn. Edited April 19, 2011 by newms

I personally think philly is quite a bit more appealing than baltimore as a city. In terms of everything from crime to food to cost of housing, philly should win. I am not personally familiar with the exact distribution of faculty interests at JHU; I only know that they are well regarded for NLP research, but it doesn't seem too crazy to me that they'd be doing lots of things in the neighborhood of medicine with their world class medical school. Penn is also strong in NLP, but Penn, I think, overall is quite a bit better than many of the schools which are supposedly ranked higher than it via US News and the like. In particular, the CS people from there that I've talked to--grad, undergrad, faculty--were just much more knowledgeable than students I've talked to from several schools that US News ranks 5 through 10. Penn, like JHU, has a very good medical school and also a very good business school both of which the CS department do a lot of collaboration with. In short, when I went to Penn's open house I had all but written them off since I had gotten into some of my top choices, but I was blown away by how they compared with other schools and would have loved to have gone there had my interests matched up better with some of the work that was being done there. *To be fair, I've never had a chance to visit the CS department in person at JHU, so maybe it would beat my expectations as well. They have also coupled the success of their CS department to that of the business and medical schools there, so I think that while it's a small department
alokkapur Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 hello the response and analysis is really helpul... leads are quite positive in favor of UPENN just one last word... Would a recruiter be more keen and willing to take on board someone with general MS in computer science(from JHU)-someone who knows a bit of everything or would he take a specialist having done MS in robotics(from UPENN)? for me aim is to land up a decent job after MS and as an indian national -i am not likely to be considered for Govt. jobs Do we get recruiters from south and west coming over to campuses at JHU/UPENN? Help me in my decision process please... I personally think philly is quite a bit more appealing than baltimore as a city. If you're into robotics though, I'd have to imagine the robotics MS would look better
frenzydude Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 That's not the reason it may not be THE reason, but it IS one of the reasons.. and i am sure it matters to the original poster.
