caserole Posted April 22, 2011 Posted April 22, 2011 Hey all, I wonder if anyone out there can tell me anything about the sculpture M.F.A. program at UT-Knoxville? They seem to be flying under the radar, but I thought the faculty work on the website looked interesting and I know they offer full funding and a stipend to those who get in. Why isn't anyone on the boards applying there?
nuna Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I got a BFA in Drawing/Painting from UTK in 2006. Only took one sculpture class, but overall the building is spacious and accommodating, and the school administration (back in 2006!) was reasonable. Knoxville is a folksy Appalachian river town. Nashville and Atlanta are both 3 hr. drives, the culture is outdoorsy, college-town, and big on football. 30,000 football fans. There's a sweet little downtown with coffee, a couple galleries (art-walk monthly), and new lofts. It's provincial but modestly open-minded, and the spirit is very independent. Somewhat of a magnetic field as people stay or return often (my experience). The KMA is the small and under-utilized art museum located walking distance from the campus. They show emerging artists sometimes; very approachable. There are a fair amount of scholarships available. I hope this tiny tidbit helps. good luck to us all.
