shah Posted October 17, 2008 Posted October 17, 2008 So I am hoping to start my MPP in the Fall, and I am ready to send out all of my applications. I was wondering how others felt about shortcomings in there resumes. I have looked into a lot of schools, and most recommend some type of work experience for admissions. As I have just finished my undergrad I have not had the chance to rack up any time in the professional world. I was active during my fours years of undergrad doing volunteer stuff, but never worked in a policy related field. What is your take on my situation. Will my respectable GRE and ugpa coupled with a good SOP make up for my lack of experience?
linden Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Shah: It seems many MPP programs will let in students without professional experience, as long as these students can show commitment to public service. (Many schools post incoming class profiles; these will tell you what percentage of students enter without work experience.) What each school will think of your application, that is impossible to predict. But, I think (although I am not expert) that not having professional work experience will not prevent you from being considered for admission. There are so many unknowns in this process, however... That said, if the lack of work experience keeps you from getting into the programs to which you applied, it might provide you with a long-term benefit. For one thing, with work experience on your resume, you might be able to get into an even better program. Also, as someone who shelled out almost 100K for a graduate degree and then decided to change careers, it will provide valuable confirmation that this is what you want to do with your life. Good luk.
