For the civil people out there:

10 awards this year vs. 31 last year.

Heres to hoping...=(.

that's only the first batch. There's probably 3-4 more batches coming, which means 30-40 more!

The real question is: is it possible to be social about science and to be scientific about society? What if society was actually based on a purely nonscientific system? then how can you find scientific values in it? Also, what if science was based on purely non-social constructs? Then how can you be social about it? These are the things we should be thinking about.

And what about antisocial science?

My friend said he feels that most majors that end with "science" like "political science" are not real sciences (as opposed to something like biology I suppose, even though you could say "biological sciences").

I think the concept of society itself is something people have grappled with throughout history.

Now that I think of it, it kind of makes sense. All those who have not heard definitely have HM, but the stimnulus is going to boost some HM's into fellowships, but they are not going to give rejected people HM's. So my guess is that there will be much fewer HM's this year. That's the logical rationale. That being said, they should've notified the rejected people much earlier than this...

What 3-4 more batches? We don't know anything yet.

Well the stimulus money is there. The best thing to do is probably to lower the award money by 5-10k for the secondary batches and just give all the HM's some money and eliminate the moneyless HM's this year, since a moneyless HM isn't really that great...

I'm prob at risk of losing my limbo status... but in an effort to make ya'll smile: I named my flash drive "Your Mom". Every time I pull my data off the lab computers, they say "Transferring x files to 'YOUR MOM'". Maybe I'm a simpleton but it still makes me smile.

By the way the funny videos on the earlier posts made me laugh at totally inappropriate times during a phone convo w/ my dad earlier. Love ya guys/gals!

heard nothing...this sucks.

Means you at least got HM!! Unless of course if my previous theory about a complete system malfunction occuring which accidentally rejected all awardees and accepted all rejectees is true...

Sorry I'm thinking your theory is wrong b/c my friend who is really smart won it. I knew she would. I do hope that the limbo = HM and I think I'd rather know I still have a chance at something than be flat rejected. HM sucks in a way but its still got some prestige, and I'm sure anyone who got a rejection letter would happily swap it for an HM.

it's all one big game, man. you get jason bourne, grow up, go to school, they play some mind games to induce some stress response, you go to college, get a job, get married, have kids.

yeah...but everything is just some protein binding DNA, genes get upregulated, others get repressed. but cosby49 stays in the cytosol with half-life of 49 minutes, stabilized by some beta turn or winged helix domain or something. Then, NSF protein ubiquitinates cosby49 targeting it for degradation by the proteasome.

but in the end, cosby49-26RT mutant in NSF binding site allows cosby49 to elude degradation, then it travels to France to study music and live the dream.

I'm finishing my masters and then I'm out.

That or I change my focus to industry work.

I've fought hard, but there is a class barrier here that I can't beat; not as a white guy anyway...

So the moral of the story is the people at the call center DEFINITELY know whats going on. Someone predicted this exact scenario (awards and rejections would go out in an initial batch). I pray that there is substantial followup funding. If they really did send out rejects, with the remaining ones getting HM or an award, that means something like 8000 rejection emails were sent tonight. That sounds sever and doubtful. In summary: keep calling NSF, but do with it politeness and do it sparingly. I did it only once, today during the whole process. And it was definitely helpful.

don't be so down and out, why can't you talk to people in charge of your program and ask them if there is some way you can get university funding or something? some girl did that in my program and got it.

The NSF should fund my research then, since I'm studying the proteasome...I'm a crucial component of their confidence/self-worth degradation pathway.

It seems like a lot of ppl here did get rejections. I think based on their wording on the website that if you weren't up for HM you're not in the running. It makes sense since we all agree that HM isn't much more than a "nice try, maybe next year if you give us your left kidney."

Yeah, proteasome is important. Add some proteasome inhibitor or knock out some ubiquitin ligases, probably treat some diseases.

This year, everyone in this forum discovered this dominant negative NSF mutant that interferes with motor function and consequently getting anything done.

I also noticed in 2005, 1024 awards were made. If stimulus money really is here, the final number of awards should be higher than 950. All will be clear in the morning, hopefully.

I think you are a bit too optimistic. I call that we know by this time next week. Good luck all!

It will not be clear in the morning. but from the looks of it, they will go several more batches and upgrade some current HMs into awardees. I'd be surprised if they don't have huge numbers in those upgrade batches. I would say you have a 75% chance of getting money if you haven't be notified. The other 25% gets HM.

This gives me hope:

Awardees, as well as Applicants not recommended for funding, have been notified by email. Recipients of Honorable Mention and any additional Fellowship award offers will be forthcoming.

But who knows what the fuck that means.

To the neurosciences guy, what is your last initial? I'm a physiology applicant, and as I recall, they're in the same category.

Man, where are your error bars? What is the p value? I want some evidence, son.

The Bessel function describes how much I hate math.

Science is crazy. Is it normal to transduce 4 genes into liver cells to make them stem cell-like? Inject a chemical into mice to give them tumors? All this is done by some obese graduate student rubbing cheetoes grease on their jeans talking about deals they found at the grocery store?

It seems strange, there are only four political science awards, which is extremely low from last year. I'm not on the list either, but I kind of figured I wasn't going to get it.

I am in PS and was rejected via email. That seems pretty harsh for political science, I wonder if the reviewers were even political scientists or from one of the disciplines that thinks PS isn't science. My application was quant/game theory, BTW. I'm not sure what else I could do besides travel back in time and improve my undergrad GPA.
