1) How collaborative is your research? Do you work with others in your group? How many coauthors are usually on your papers?

2) Do you pay for the degree, or do they pay for you?

3) Where do your professors get funding?

1) Sometimes collaborative, sometimes not. Typically papers have three coauthors or fewer. Problem sets in the first few years are often tackled collaboratively.

2) Any good PhD (acadmic) program pays for the degree and offers health benefits and an acceptable living stipend.

3) Either from outside sources (NSF), their (sometimes generous) university research accounts, or from other kinds of funding unique to my university.
