noschoolwantsme Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 (edited) Hello, Thank you for your time. I am thinking about applying to MS in Computer Science. About me: *International Student, But Go To US 4-Year College, Rank 60-70th *GPA 3.9 (both major and overall) *Top 10% in my class in my major *Some Research Experience (submitted one paper, 2nd author, stilling waiting for result) *GRE: V730 Q800 AW 3.5 *3 Internships in Top Companies in the industry *LOR - unknown I am thinking about MS only in the following schools, (in my order of preference) Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Princeton, CMU, Princeton, Yale, UPenn, UCLA, USC, University of Washington Please, could you guys give me any input of my chance of getting into those? I would really appreciate it! Thank you! Edited June 14, 2011 by noschoolwantsme
newms Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Why does no school want you? I'd think you'd have a pretty good shot at those schools. Is the paper you submitted at a reputable conference (or possibly journal)? If your paper were to be accepted I'd think you'd have a pretty good chance to get into at least a few of the places you listed. Of course, a lot will depend on the quality of your statement of purpose and those of your letters of recommendation. I don't think all of those places you list provide funding for Master's students, so that is something you should take into consideration as well. Good luck.

I hope the reality is the opposite. My paper was submitted to a international conference. I am not sure if it is reputable or not. I don't think it will be selected finally, lol. But I can still say that I had research experience and submitted one paper, right? I am OK with no funding. I just hope that Stanford, MIT, Princeton or Harvard can accept a non-funding student. I want to go to those schools so bad, lol~ Thanks again!
OH YEAH Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 Princeton fully funds all masters students. It's a very hard masters program to get into because of that, however.

newms Posted June 15, 2011 Posted June 15, 2011 How did you know Princeton funds all their master students? Is it official? Thanks! OH YEAH is doing a PhD at Princeton, but you can check the websites of the different programs, usually they have a page about their funding availability. I've also heard that UIUC (which isn't on your list) funds it's Master's students as well, but I'm not sure if that's current information. People have discussed funding situations at different MS programs before, such as in by a Stanford MS student, so if you searched the CS forum here you'll find some info on which schools give funding for MS students.

Thanks a lot! If I don't care about funding, do you say I have a chance on getting into top schools? Stanford, CMU, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Berkeley? Thanks~
the poisoned pawn Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Thanks a lot! If I don't care about funding, do you say I have a chance on getting into top schools? Stanford, CMU, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Berkeley? Thanks~ Based on what you posted, yes, I think you do have a chance for a Masters admission at those schools. My friend has a pretty insignificant profile and got admission into the Masters program of Cornell, but he got rejected from all the PhD programs he applied to.
OH YEAH Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 From what I've heard, Cornell's M.Eng is really easy to get into. A lot of (most?) people who applied to Cornell for PhD and got rejected were also automatically to the M.Eng program. I doubt it is as easy to get into the other programs as it is to get into Cornell.

I am not sure if I will have a chance of getting in schools like Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, CMU, Harvard or Princeton.
