MissJ Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Hey guys! I am planning on applying for grad school for fall 2012(most of the universities that Iam planning to apply have deadlines around dec 1,2011--jan 15 2012).I am actually very confused on whether I should take the current GRE format(which would only give me about a month's time for preparation if a get a slot in july) or take the New GRE revised general test sometime in September-which would give me a little more time to prepare. What's freaking me out about the new GRE test is that you only get to view your online scores in mid November and I guess they would be posted to you sometime in mid November too.Do you think it would be okay for me to take the test in September and still meet the December deadlines? Or should I just rush my preparations and take it sometime in July? (if I get a slot that is) Also, with the new GRE pattern, will we still be able to see the "unofficial" scores, right after we finish the test? Any suggestions would be greatly valued. Thanks in advance! lottesnk 1
MissJ Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 have you seen a comprehensive list of all the changes in the new GRE? i was indecisive as well in choosing to take the new or the old one. basically if you are one of the first ones to take the new GRE, you are the lab rat. Hence, is why you wont get your scores until a few months after. I assume they take more time to examine the first round of scores for kinks and what not. ultimately my deal making factor to take the old GRE is that "hey this is the last of the old GRE so why not? if my score sucks then ill just take the new one" but in your situation, since your deadlines are in late this year/early next your, i dont think you'll have a problem with waiting to take the new GRE> Hey PsychYe thanks for the reply! Yes I have seen the list of changes in the new GRE(from several websites actually) and I spent pretty much the whole day looking at forums discussing about the New GRE. Seems like most people think its going to be really tough(especially the quant section). It's pretty depressing to feel like tthe lab rat----how I hate myself for not having this sudden awakening about taking the GRE earlier. But, taking the current one would mean very little time to prepare as I am working full time. Have you tried taking the sample powerprep II test? I guess its got the new format.I haven't really tried it,but I am going to do that soon, just so I know how the new format really feels. I've got another question( I posted it elsewhere too) if I take the current format in July, would I be able to take the new one in August?(in case I screw up the old one..lol). The current format says that you can only sit once for the GRE in a calendar month. I read somewhere that for the new one you can only take it once in 60 days or something. I wonder how this is going to work, when shifting from the current to the new one......
MissJ Posted June 24, 2011 Author Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks for all that info PsychYe! I just checked the dates...and I could'nt see any avaliable dates in july...So I'm most probably going to just take the revised test...Wish me luck..I'll be needing it! lol If i ever get a slot in july, like u said I'll call them before hand... So who else is going to take the revised test? Do post here...we could probably have something like an online study group..lol
ktel Posted June 28, 2011 Posted June 28, 2011 I didn't have to take the GRE to get into my Master's at U of T, but am considering possibly doing a PhD and possibly going to the states. I am intrigued by their 50% off offer from Aug 1st-Sept 30th but think it might be silly to take the test if I'm not sure I'm going to apply anywhere yet, and even if I do decide, I won't be applying for at least a year. I do have lots of time this summer to study though. I'm bored at work today and was doing some of the sample questions (in the old format) and they remind me very much of my grade 12 Alberta diploma exams. The revised version seems like it might be better for me in the verbal section because they are taking vocabulary out of context out of the test. My math skills are definitely good enough for the quantitative section, especially if they are giving me a calculator.
