Analyze an Issue

Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Educational Institutions have a very important role to play in the development and enhancement of a student’s career. They are not only accountable for the academic knowledge they impart during the course of study but are also responsible for making a student successful in life.

In the path to becoming a successful person, a student may have to encounter situations wherein they have to make choices that decide the course of their education. It is at this point that the educational institutions play a secondary yet pivotal role in helping the students make the right choice.

It is the responsibility of the educational institutions that they help the students in deciding and hence pursuing those fields where the student has a greater chance of succeeding in accordance with their calibre. It may not be adequate to doubt a student’s capability, however this should not mislead them to try and achieve something which is next to impossible or whose chances of success are negligible. For example, a student who has been below average throughout his academic profile should not be encouraged to take up fields such as Doctorate, Astronomy or any other which requires high level education.

If the educational institutions fail to do so and encourage every student to pursue any field even with negligible success ratio, then it is not wrong to say that they shall be doing a great injustice not only to the students but also to their profession. It may be taken into the account that the failure of achieving the set goals by the students may lead to emotional imbalances, distress, nervous breakdown and even suicidal tendencies.

Educational institutions, instead of encouraging such moves should focus to help students identify their true passion and interest in which they may excel and hence achieve success. Every student has some talent which may not always be something that gives them a well paid job but something which makes them successful in what they do. It is useless to run after something which you are not capable of even if the perks are higher. Take for instance, Amitabh Bachchan, he always wanted to pursue administrative services and become an IAS officer, his teacher realizing that this dream was far from reality not only helped him understand the fact but also helped him bring out his true talent and today he is one of the most sought after actor in the entertainment industry.

Thus, it is essential that the Educational Institutions not only provide students with the academic curriculum but also refrain them for pursuing those fields of study where they are unlikely to succeed. Failing which, it may distort the life of student as these failures at young age have an everlasting impact on the minds and hearts of the student and they may take a lot of time to recover from these to pursue another field of study in which they may succeed and in many cases it may never happen.
