Lexie05 Posted July 30, 2011 Posted July 30, 2011 Hi, When applying to Ph.d. programs for psych (cognitive/neuro), how are post-graduate transcripts viewed? Specifically, are GPAs combined for 1) a first and second bachelors or 2) a bachelors and masters? Would the original degree hold more weight, or is the more recent considered more relevant? Does anyone have any experience getting into a solid (~top-30) program with a low undergraduate GPA and higher MA GPA, assuming positive recommendations and meaningful research experience? Thanks a bunch! rixp 1
Lexie05 Posted August 1, 2011 Author Posted August 1, 2011 Hey Everyone, I would really appreciate any insight you might have into this process. I know exactly the type of program (and research topics) I would like to pursue. However, my current GPA precludes applying before obtaining a second degree. If anyone has successfully navigated a similar situation, is currently navigating, or knows of someone who has overcome an initially underwhelming performance, please share. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to attain my goals. Is grad work generally weighted more if the program is rigorous and research-based? What about a better performance at a strong, non-elite grad school following a low GPA at an Ivy? Would an upward trend toward the end of undergrad coupled with high grades/strong recs from a masters program make me competitive for top programs? Thank you in advance for any thoughts or suggestions!
