So, as I'm narrowing down my list, I have realized that a lot of the professors at George Washington University are doing research in the areas that I am interested, and the schools seems like it would be a good fit. However, I have seen very little talk of that school here on the boards, and what I did read was that they were having issues with funding a few years ago, so I was just wondering what, if anything, anyone knows about their current PhD program. I don't want to apply if it's going to be a waste of time.

I, too, plan on applying to GWU. The program would be a great fit for me, especially since they have JJ Cohen. I'm a medievalist with interestests in temporality, divination, medievalism, and psychoanalysis / historicism. A friend from my MA cohort is attending this fall, and she appears really excited / optimistic about it. I haven't talked to her about funding, however. Lucky for her, she doesn't have to worry either way. I have heard mixed things about their funding. According to the NRC data table for English doctoral program, GWU funds 33% of their first year students. However, even though just released, the data dates from 2006-2007, so it's not wholly accurate. I would also like to get some more insight on GWU's program. I would really like to apply, but I don't want it to be a waste.

Yeah, my interests are psychoanalysis and trauma studies in contemporary ethnic lit. They have several people who do that. However, I don't want to apply if funding isn't really there because I have to have funding.

Another medievalist checking in here. I'd be curious to hear more about this, too, if anyone has any insight. GWU is also on my short list due to J.J. Cohen, and because my partner has many connections in the BWI area, so it would be an easy move. If they have serious funding problems, however, I might reconsider. Their program was highly recommended to my by an assistant professor of medieval French.

Bump to 2013 (that's a big bump)

I have just been recently accepted with funding into GWU's English PhD program. Has anyone else?

I applied to GWU.  And no, I haven't heard anything yet.  I'm almost glad.  I'm in "no news is good news" mode.

I only have answers from 2 out of 13 schools right now.

It'll be scary when 11 out of 13 schools are eliminated, and I have only two schools left as "my last hope."

Anyway, I got an email from GWU about a week ago which said that apps are being reviewed and answers would be out in 3-4 weeks.  It seemed like a generic email, though.  I can see decisions happening before 3-4 weeks.

I'm getting more and more nervous.

Okay, maybe I'm paranoid. Maybe I've been over-obsessively checking status... HOWEVER... did anyone else's status shift to 'Your application is under review.'? Maybe it always said that and I'm just psyching myself out.

Just out of curiosity, what is your concentration?

Sorry it took me a while to answer this.  I didn't see it at first.  My area of interest is African American lit.

For me, it's early medieval lit. I picked GWU because of Jeffrey Jerome Cohen. I'd love to work with him! I'm very interested in the 'post-medieval' work of the Babel Working Group and Punctum Publishing.

Awesome.  Good luck to you! (and to me).

Good luck to you too!!

I really need to call a hiatus on all this website checking... geezus. If only I could pry myself away from the damn computer. Think of all the research I could be doing if I just shut off the computer for a bit!

I just was on the results board and saw a single acceptance (via phone) for today.  It may or may not be authentic.  (I'm not one to assume any result posted is fake, yet...people have talked about that happening, especially when there is a lone acceptance for a school posted.)

Even if it is authentic, though, I don't think there's any reason to be alarmed unless you see a bunch of acceptances.  A single acceptance could mean they just contacted some very tip-top candidates and more are to come.

Anyway, I actually haven't been in my applications much.  But I do refresh email on my phone CONSTANTLY.  I'm defnitely starting to annoy myself, lol.

I have a terrible, terrible confession to make. It really is a fake. My husband was teasing me for checking the website every few minutes (on my phone, on my computer, at work... ergh) and he posted an acceptance to drive me nuts. Now we can't figure out how to remove it. I clicked the 'report spam' link, but the fake is still there.

God, I am so sorry to anyone this may have freaked out. My husband thinks it's funny... and kind of doesn't realize that a lot of us are living and breathing program decisions right now.

Again, I am sorry to everyone!! I wish I could figure out how to delete the damn thing! This is so embarrassing.

Seriously, I feel like I'm jinxed now.

lol, well, no harm done, really, when the fakeness is owned up to.  I actually wasn't alarmed anyway.  I don't get alarmed until I see a bunch of acceptances.

Anyway, all of this will be over in about three weeks.  Seriously...we'll have answers and the anxiety will be overwith.

It's the weirdest feeling.  I live my life -- teach, watch movies, spend time with S.O., have lunch with friends -- but 3/4 of my brain is on PhD apps.  It's like I can't be normal again until after March 10th.

Thanks. I wanted to punch him. Geezus. But then he bought me beer. So...

Yes, it feels like my entire world has been consumed by PhD apps. It's like I won't be able to breathe properly until its over. The process has even infiltrated my dreams. (Hence my husband's desire to tease me with what he saw as an innocuous prank.)

Hi, all! Anyone else get accepted by Alexa Huang this morning?? By this morning, I mean like a personal email at 12:45 a.m. . . .Very excited with the offer!!!

Congratulations!!!

No, I haven't heard a peep out of them.

So, how many of you have heard? I'm considering emailing the DGS at this point, but figure I should probably hold out for at least another day.

During application season, I was interacting with a person named Alex Huang, and it was a man (based on the picture I saw on the faculty website) who did a lot of work with Shakespeare.  He was the director of graduate studies.  But in recent emails, this person's name is Alexa Huang.  Also a person who does work with Shakespeare.   I went to the website, and now it is a picture of a woman.

Did anyone else notice this?

Wow, that is weird! And no, I hadn't noticed this. I can't fathom a proper explanation...
