Hmmm, quorum sensing, eh? I'm not a microbiologist but I am doing a microbiology module this term, in fact I have an exam on it next week. Quorum sensing and biofilm formation were in one of the lectures... interesting stuff, although the lecturer was trying to present biofilm formation as a form of "development" in bacteria, which I don't really buy. I actually had a rather horrible dream about biofilms, but let's not go there.

Anyway sorry, I'm not really contributing much, continue.

Yep, I am applying for microbiology programs and biofilms/social behavior are an interest that I hold. I am keeping an open mind, within reason, about the exact labs I want to join because this way I gain a flexibility in choosing where to do my thesis. I have had seven years of research experience and found that you can be passionate about a field and not be passionate about a specific research path/question. Furthermore, you can burnout on a single topic.

I applied to micro, yeah, but not that exactly speciality you're considering. It's somewhat tangentally related, I hope to work in self-organization and complex phenomena in microorganisms, like Myxococcus or Dictiostelida, where simple cell/cell communication results in highly complex novel phenotypes thanks to group phenomena. I made a resolution not to study some protein, as I feel that too much of biology has become relegated to just sort of cataloging this-protein-does-that type stuff. While important, it tends not to vary in an informational sense, rather it's just the context that's changing. I'd like to do some work in fundamental properties of evolutionary / complex systems, and microbiology tends to yield the best models.

I'm applying to Microbiology programs. I'm most interested in Environmental Microbiology/Microbial Ecology, but I'm applying to medical microbiology programs too. Environmental Micro programs I've applied to: Cornell, UMass Amherst, UMaine-Orono (some environmental). Medical Microbio programs I've applied to: UMass Medical School Worcester, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Pathobiology), Tufts Sackler School, Medical University of South Carolina (they also have some environmental there).

So far I've been invited to UMass Amherst and UMass Medical School Worcester, and rejected by MUSC. Haven't heard back from anybody else yet, though I'm pretty sure I won't be hearing from Cornell and JHU.

Anyone hear from any of these programs?

I'm so sad! I applied to microbiology depts: UCLA and USC.

UCLA: didn't get GRE scores in time. So now my app is on their back burner. I'm sure the burner is off.

USC (MIMG): They had no money to fund!

My only option is to be admitted to USC PIBBS. Which, actually is my top/first choice institution! If, a rejection. My dreams can wait, and I will get into a program somewhere, somehow, sometime--eventually. God will lead me into the direction I'm supposed to be headed. I'm clinging to faith, trying to not let go.
