at what point can I include a paper on my CV?

I'm working on my first paper to be published, but I'm going to be submitting my application with CV before I submit the paper to the publisher. Can I still include it on the CV? Would I just say "in preparation" or something like that?

Yes, and yes - I've seen that done in both applicants and tenured professors! Just make sure it's clearly labeled as in prep.
