sonib Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 One of my three profs has asked me to draft the reference letter by my own..... I want a well-balanced letter but i have never done dis before,,it is quite uncomfortable to write it from someone else's perspective. what should i do??
EquationForLife Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 What worked for me was I wrote up some details about what I did with this person and what I would like this person to discuss, and then I gave that information to a friend. This way someone else is still writing your letter of recommendation so you wont have that self bragging awkwardness
ktel Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Do you have access to any letters written for you before? I often used those as a template, so I could see what other people wrote about me and try to phrase things similarly.
sonib Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 Thank you so much PVnRT and ktel,,,, Unfortunately I don't have previous letters, but I am in good terms with some profs so I can ask their opinions about me. It's a great idea PVnRT,, i will definitely do this. meanwhile I have tried to write something, but I feel it is superficial and immature , I would like to share it with you guys, suggest me any changes and inputs to make it better. please let me know what grad schools seek in these recommendation letters.. I have known xyz since 2007 when he started his xyz course. He was in the xyz class I taught. I have noticed a remarkable development in his analytical approach for subjects in last four years. I would certainly recommend XYZ highly. His innovativeness would be very valuable for graduate studies. During academic activities XYZ confirmed his abilities to grasp concepts quickly and communicate his ideas clearly. He is well motivated and creative student. Naturally, he needed advice and guidance, which he utilized successfully to achieve his goals. His work and projects illustrates innovative concepts and Proper implementation of theoretical knowledge. His zeal and well focused approach for his subjects and academic activities led him to get an opportunity to work in the Dept. of XYZ, ABC (well known research institute) for his final year project. The only irregularity in his performance I have noticed was in the starting of the course due to homesickness, but as the course progressed XYZ was getting more and more independent, setting his own goals. His tendency of self evaluation helps him to eliminate possible errors. In conclusion I highly recommend XYZ as a promising student and I have no doubt that he will make remarkable contributions.
