EASC Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Hello, I am re-applying to PhD programs to start Fall 2012. My CV, quoting two professors is "impressive." I have one publication as first author while working at Princeton University as research assistant. I have 14 conference presentations from which 4 were oral. I am taking the revised GRE the first week of December. Now the bad side is that my undergrad GPA is 3.017. I completed a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering with a GPA of 3.555. I have research experience in every summer and semester since 2005. Before attending the school that I got the Bachelor from I went to a community college. I know that an associate's degree community college is irrelevant compared to the bachelors but my GPA there is 3.795. However, I took a class on Nanomaterials at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and got an A. I did apply last year but I didn't have a publication yet since it was submitted in January 2011 and I did pretty bad in the old GRE format. Also, regarding my low GPA as undergrad, I can say is that my low GPA as undergrad was due to personal problems, and in fact, it is noticeable that improved rapidly. So my question is if I stand any chance to get into a top school for a PhD in electrical engineering? Any advise?
eesj Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Im applying with similar stats..3.16UG GPA/ 3.43MS GPA and ok GREs 710/410/4 (Q/V/AW). 4+ research experience in industry, two pending patents, no pubs(haven't been allowed to publish). I think the SOP and LoRs will make or break your application. Good luck!
ktel Posted November 19, 2011 Posted November 19, 2011 Your undergrad GPA is low, but it's above most of the minimum cut-offs of a 3.0. While your Master's GPA is higher, that's expected, because Master's classes are typically marked higher, so it might not be fully considered as a huge improvement. If your research is impressive, that's what should matter most after you meet some of the minimum requirements that programs have regarding GPA and GRE scores.

Thanks I will let you know in a few weeks about Stanford since I applied with similar stats. Although I did have a professor from Stanford EE write a letter of rec, and two Stanford alumni write the others. One recommender is still tight with Stanford alumni association .

eesj Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Congratulations my friend, What about fund? Do you got any RA or TA? and can you please give some information about your C.V? I did not get a TA, but the letter stated "Your interest match well with professor xyz and he will serve as your program advisor...please contact him with any questions regards to research programs or academic issues." I will most likely contact him in regards to my options in possibly receiving funding.
