My question is: how bad does it look to have, say, 10 images with the remaining 10 detail slides of those paintings? I want to show new and cohesive work and because my work is so detailed, I feel close-ups would be warranted. Just don't know how that looks to an admissions committee.

Let me rephrase the question: thoughts from experienced folks here on whether it's ok to include less than 20 images in favor of detail shots for the sake of cohesion?

Pretty basic question that doesn't need seeing someones work to answer ;) No worries. A solid portfolio doesn't have less than 15 pieces/images is what I was told by a professor... But that said I'd argue 10 amazing pieces of work trumps adding additional "so-so" work any day. My two cents...

you are an artist - you should be able to figure out what you are trying to get across to your audience. If you say:

"I want to show new and cohesive work and because my work is so detailed, I feel close-ups would be warranted."

then damnit do it -

Use detail shots sparingly. Ten is ridiculous. Personally if I had to use detail shots, I'd only put in something like two. But check school requirements. They sometimes will say how many detail shots they allow.

10 details of 10 paintings is fine as long as the work warrants it. If you make big paintings with tons of tiny, intricate details then of course it will make sense.
