southernsoul79 Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I just began my graduate school career (MPA) with the intention of someday becoming a city manager. However, very quickly I am realizing that I have a greater interest in writing, researching, and thinking about urban policy issues rather than working on the administration side. I think I may be better suited to go on to get a PhD in Public Policy. I would love to go to a top 20 school. I'm only a semester into my program. Would changing into a different Master's program (MPP, or M.A. in Urban Policy) make me a better applicant for top PhD programs or is an MPA sufficient when applying for PhD programs in public policy?
iwouldpreferanonymity Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I am finishing an MPA at the moment, and have received two acceptances (so far) to PhD programs in Political Science. Since the MPA does, in theory, prepare students better for a career in public policy than in political science, I would assume that PhD programs in the former field would look favorably on an applicant with that credential. In terms of getting into a 'top 20 school,' I would guess that what is true for political science is true for public policy as well. That is, the best way to increase your chances at admission are to do well on the GRE, to write a good POS, and to indicate within it how your interests 'fit' with those of the department. I hope that helps. :-)
