Interviews

How common is it for departments to request interviews? Someone at Cornell told me they don't do formal interviews as part of the application/admission process; they do invite already accepted students to the campus, more for purposes of wooing than vetting. Which schools typically require them for admissions, and what are they like? Thanks!

Harvard doesn't interview. I applied last year and had no idea that any departments interviewed applicants.
