sociology27 Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Does anybody have insight into the program? Any opinions on how the program is viewed? Anybody else apply?
sociology27 Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Yeah, that was me. I was contacted from my POI in a short, informal email. They definitely did not send the "chat" invites out all in one bunch. So my guess is they're stretching it over a few day span and letting people know they want to chat the day of. They're only ACCEPTING 5 people this year !
dizzid Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 My department chair at VCU got her PhD from UVA in Sociology. She's pretty badass....her interest is Pornography right now and she's pretty much changed the face of our entire department with her focus on Gender Studies. from wikipedia: Jennifer Johnson's (Professor of Sociology) work at the Department of Defense in the area of Social Network Analysis won her the 2006 Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award, which is the highest-ranking civilian service award given by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dr. Johnson was also awarded the 2004 Analyst of the Quarter by the Joint Warfare Analysis Center for her work on the Social Network Analysis Methodology Team.
sociology27 Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Just got acceptance email and phone call from POI.
Soc231160 Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Just saw another UVA acceptance. Anyone want to claim it?
avee Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Hey Dawn--I totally know you! And UVA has been talked about by Dr. J and others as being a very divided department. I know people who stopped at their M.A. at UVA--even though they had full funding for 5 years--because they didn't like the program.
MinervasOwl Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 Three acceptance so far on the results page- so three places left if we assume all those who accepted have posted results. Fingers crossed.
MinervasOwl Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Its a great department, some of the younger faculty are really doing some excellent work. Its a very supportive environment over all. Am a minority but have felt very comfortable and found (especially some of the younger faculty) to be very approachable, and friendly, but they will certainly push you to produce better and better work. I know some people have strange ideas about the dept but I think it is definitely transitioning into something very different than the conservative type of place people think it is.
