Enzian Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Hey Enzian, any word on ISR? None. Maybe I'm being ignored because they're waiting to surprise me with a huge funding package and it's taking them a long time to get it all collected?! But maybe I'm just a low priority.
Ablukhov Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Maybe they are desperately trying to come up with funding to enlarge the program so they can accommodate three amazing applicants?!

pelevinfan Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 One can dream. AGREED. C'mon, don't they want to enlarge the program? Everyone knows schools should all be funneling funds towards Slavic studies...
Ablukhov Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 AGREED. C'mon, don't they want to enlarge the program? Everyone knows schools should all be funneling funds towards Slavic studies... I asked the magic 8 ball if we would all get into ISR and it said "signs point to yes". Then I asked if we would all get huge financial packages and it said "most likely".... should we e-mail the adcom and tell them they we already know about surprise they are planning? Enzian 1

I say yes. Just tell them, we know you want it to be a huuuge surprise, but guess what?!? We know! Cat's out of the bag, offer us our awesome funding packages now. :-) Edited February 9, 2012 by pelevinfan Enzian and Ablukhov 2
Enzian Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 Hahaha, I love it. But I call not-it on email duty! pelevinfan and Ablukhov 2
Enzian Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Hey Enzian, any word on ISR? Just got this from Prof. Lounsbery: Thank you for getting in touch. Not to worry, your application was flagged as potential ISR and will be considered by both Comp Lit and Russian & Slavic. Official word should come from Comp Lit; I’m not sure exactly when, unfortunately. They've totally got a big surprise in the works for us ISR folks. Just look at all the positive key words! There's: "thank you," "potential," "will be," "should," "sure," "[...]fortunately." The sub-text is so clear!

Maybe it's best you didn't mention the magic 8 ball; it is polite after all to pretend we have no idea what they have in store for us- let them think they really surprised us. (In all seriousness, thanks for the update!)

(In all seriousness, thanks for the update!) You're welcome! And in all seriousness, I was half-expecting the response to say "while the official letters won't be sent for a few weeks, I can go ahead and let you know now that...and I regret that...and I do hope you will be able to attend graduate school elsewhere..." So, at least it wasn't that. Not yet, anyway.
pelevinfan Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Just got this from Prof. Lounsbery: They've totally got a big surprise in the works for us ISR folks. Just look at all the positive key words! There's: "thank you," "potential," "will be," "should," "sure," "[...]fortunately." The sub-text is so clear! Yay, she wrote you back! Glad to see that they haven't forgotten about us. Not to be a total downer, but I'm a little worried now. If we're hearing from the Comp Lit department, shouldn't we theoretically be hearing at the same time as all the other non-ISR applicants? I desperately want to believe that the answer to that is a resounding 'no! we're in a separate category!' but based on Prof. Lounsbery's email, it sounds like the Slavic department has little to do with it...if I don't hear by the end of the next week, I think I'll just assume rejection :-\
Enzian Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Eh, my feeling is that, if each app has to be reviewed by two departments rather than one, it's naturally going to take a little extra time to hear back. I wonder how big the cohort usually is for the ISR...
pelevinfan Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I think I remember them telling me that they usually have 1-2 students a year, so maybe not a cohort so much as a 'hey you, loner! come do research here.' Obviously not sure though (this was a conversation that took place in August.) Ack, hating this process more and more every day!
Enzian Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Well, obviously this year they're just going to have to expand.
pelevinfan Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Let's hope so! I have to say though, I just got my first acceptance and though it would be lovely to have to choose between that and NYU, the pressure feels just a liittle bit lessened :-)

I'm so happy for you! It must be wonderful to be able to relax a bit :-)
cascadingdissonance Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Anyone heard further word on this?
pelevinfan Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 No word here either, starting to get a little antsy...
Ablukhov Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Just got the news from Prof. Lounsbery- they can't take anyone for ISR this year
Enzian Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Just got the news from Prof. Lounsbery- they can't take anyone for ISR this year Sigh. One more implicit rejection from a PhD program. Good luck to you all in other endeavors.
Enzian Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Thanks, Enzian! You too! And thanks for the update, by the way! Who knows how long they'd keep us in limbo...
pelevinfan Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Just got the news from Prof. Lounsbery- they can't take anyone for ISR this year Wow, that just really sucks. Had many different scenarios playing out in my head, but that was certainly never one of them.
Ablukhov Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Yeah, I pretty much couldn't be more disappointed. Unfortunately though, I did sort of start wondering if this might be the problem as the process was taking so long. Here's an excerpt from the e-mail: But as happens every year (especially in Comp Lit programs), there were many competing interests at play. This year the end result was that the department did not accept any Russia-focused applicants, despite their (your) manifest strengths. Believe me, I deeply regret this! So all my focus is on Columbia now...and that is poor food for hope. Any news on that front, pelevinfan?
